VS2021 editing & audio

Post by JDH99 »

Hi, I am having problems editing (removing advert segments) from captured TV Mpeg files (Pal 25fps). 2 such test files with adverts play correctly with VLC.

Just dropping these files into VS2021 & playing them individually within VS causes the audio to be several secs behind.
All input Mpeg files that use VS for edited & unedited output files (Mpeg & MP4 output) still give an audio lag (several secs) when played with VLC. Playing around with various settings under VS makes no observable difference.

A web feed advised that the problem with VS could be the captured video being variable frame rate & advises converting to a fixed frame rate MP4 using Handbrake.
Playing such a file now gives correct playback (audio & video in sync) with VLC.
Dropping the file into VS states that there is NO audio in the source MP4 file, and gives no audio on playback within VS. Generating every possible audio coding from VLC gives a no audio result with VS.

Another web feed advises after generating a fixed frame rate MP4 file to then convert it back to Mpeg2 with Brorsoft, striping the audio with audiocity & recombining with VS (ensuring correct alignment) - Ugh - not tried; makes a mockery of having an all-in-one editor such as VS.

Currently I cannot do this relatively simple task with VS2021 that I could do many years ago with Ulead VS8 & WinXP/ Win7 - if only I had kept an old PC. If I still had an older VS that would work now with Win10 I would still do so; VS 2019 & 2020 would not even load (crashed out part way through) under win10. I have tried Corel support & was first advised that I should upgrade the video card (no benefit) & then had a US expert trying everything to get it to do so for several hours and then just advised me to rebuild the computer - but at least VS2021 does actually load now!
I have tried some other video editors but they had other problems.

Hopefully someone can offer a sane approach to a simple video editing task that also has in-sync audio ?
Yours hopefully John (UK).

You don't tell us the exact properties of the captured files or what you captured them with. Please right click on one of the captured files in the VS timeline, and select Properties. Then either copy them all here or take a screenshot of the Properties box and upload it here as an attachment.

Quite often, sound sync problems are caused by the use of Smart Render, so if that is enabled, untick that box.

Also, if you have enabled Harware Encoding, untick that box too.

Hi
A lot going on here, not sure where to start.
1 / installing video studio, any Corel versions should install to windows 10 with little or no problems.
Certainly 2019 and 2020 does work with W10.
First download the programs installation files as new / latest files.
2 / Try running the programs “clean up tool” for 2019 to remove the program or leftovers.
3 / removing adds from mpeg, try using “split by scene” should work well with mpeg2 video.
4 / make sure your project properties match the video files properties
5 / if you are converting the original video, make sure you use similar settings to the original regarding frame rates, not to forget about any interlacing re progressive.
6 / I think others have had problems editing video downloaded from TV captured files, makes one wonder if the files are copy protected in some way???

Your profile shows you using 2019 trial, can you please update your profile

Hi Ken & Trevor,
Thank you for your replies to the above problem and I have now updated my profile.

The need for posting files seems to have been superseded (see below).

• I did run the 2019 clean-up tool at that time to no avail. Now that I have managed to get the VS2021 (trial) version to install then there is nothing to be gained by considering further the issues as to why the previous VS versions would not install.
• The “split by scene” is disabled in the trial version.
• I had checked the interlacing previously and did not affect the result.
• Re copy protection, this has not been a problem in the past, also because the behaviour is the same across all the different broadcaster’s various channels, then this is unlikely.
• Matching project properties & using similar settings is sensible and should be easier with the full VS version.
• For clarification, the Smart render & the hardware encoding were turned off.

From your replies, which were very helpful, these made me think about the problem afresh and consider other possibilities. From all this I realised that the mp4 files I was generating from Handbrake contained 2 audio tracks (AAC & AC3). When I repeated the conversion with just 1 (stereo) audio track in AAC, then I found that VS could recognise the audio track as well as the video (VLC & Windows MP were both ok with 2 audio tracks). I tested this further by editing the mp4 file (removing advert segments) and all was ok re lip-sync.

Now that I can achieve a full edit of a fixed frame rate mp4 file and achieve good a/v synchronisation, it seems worth while now to purchase the full version of VS2021. It is just unfortunate that I cannot do this with the source Mpeg files.
I just hope that the full version will give more options to enable mpeg TV files containing older 4:3 films to give a video with people of normal width rather than very slim people !

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments.
Regards
John

The goal posts seem to have changed a little with you mentioning “4:3 films to give a video with people of normal width rather than very slim people”.
Video Studio many years ago used 4:3 ratio, with the introduction of HD video the default project settings tend to be 16:9 widescreen, HD video 1920 x 1080
If you are using 4:3 then you may have to manage the project settings to apply 4:3 from the default 16:9.
In addition older 4:3 video tended to be anamorphic with the frames being stretched into shape to view the correct ratio. This can cause some issues where people may either put on a few pounds or be stretched vertically, as your “very slim people”.

So what are the properties and types of the video files you are working with?

I think you may have misunderstood the comment re 4:3 films. Here I was was referring to broadcast tv channels (HD & non HD) that broadcast 4:3 films as 16:9 (i.e. with dark sides to fill the side spaces, otherwise the people would be become stretched and become very wide if the 4:3 film was transmitted as a full width 16:9). The broadcast itself is still 16:9 and in their normal broadcast mode (mpeg or TS (HD) & sometimes TS (non HD).
All the captured TV files I have tried with VS2021 so far have been mpeg 16:9 (with & without 4:3 content). The resulting VS video of 4:3 content gave rather thin people when viewed on the widescreen computer monitor. 16:9 content seems fine.
From my perspective the goal posts are where they were.

I normally try to match the project settings etc to have a higher quality (but not too much) than that of the input video to avoid too much degradation from transcoding but also ensuring that the resulting file size does not become ridiculously large.

It would be useful to have an option to select the output mp4 properties to be the same as the input mp4 file properties but I cannot find a way of doing this - perhaps I can once I purchase the full version shortly.

So the properties of the video files are that of whatever the TV broadcaster is broadcasting that channel as; and I capture this with a digital tv receiver card within the PC (BlackGold DVB-T2/T/C/S2) and write to SSD storage to avoid any missed data saves with a high priority task within Windows. The capturing of the files has never been a problem as these always play correctly with VLC or on the TV via a WD media player.
I just need to be able to edit files & work with other input formats such as from cameras, iPads etc, normally generating mp4 output files.

We can match the output / rendered files properties to use the input files properties.
1 / First the program should show a message to allow us to match the project properties to the video file.
The option from Preferences (F6) – project – "show message when inserting first video clip", first being the operative word, start a new project and insert one of your video files, this does not work for all video files but most.
2 / Once the project properties match the video from Share – option top left (a little greyed out) “Same as Project settings” tick the box, assuming the project settings are to your liking.
The small down arrow will give the option “Same As First Video Clip”, this should be your video file.

3 / Settings Movie Profile Manager, this allows us to create our own share profile
Choose the Format
Selecting the ADD option will allow us to browse for our video file, the properties will be used to create a new profile.
From Share – we can choose a profile from the list, our new profiles being at the top.

Ok your captured files
Can you import those to the programs library, right click a clip and choose properties, what are they?
