unable to delete Project Folders

Post by QdaDad »

on windows 10 home / VS Ultimate2020 / ver. 23.3.0.646 (64-bit)

I am having trouble deleting unwanted project folders. whenever I try to delete a folder the delete option is greyed out.
I can delete the folders that I've added to VS since upgrading to VS2020 from VS2019. But I cannot delete the folders that were migrated from VS2019.
I also cannot add any more folder and I understand that there is some limit of folders.

You could try using explorer to locate the folders in the default path for the application, and delete them using explorer. They will be there, but locating them could be fiddly.
This is an example of why I never use CVS for file management. It's an editor, not a file manager, even tho it has that files feature. However, no one would ever say that CVS compares favourably with explorer in managing files. And CVS is more than happy to import clips and export rendered files to any path (drive and folder) on the PC that is your choice.
So a good practice is to create your project folders in explorer, store the various images and photo clips there in sub-folders, and simply import them as needed to a project file. Save the project file for that target (holiday/presentation/event) also in that same folder(s). And just use CVS for what it is good at - video editing.

I do not understand which folders you are trying to remove, can you provide a screen shot or tell us the names of the folders.
I assume you are referring to the library structure?
You say folders were migrated from 2019, that seems to indicate Templates aka Instant Projects unless you used the Import / Export library option.
A screen shot attached to your post would help

Thanks DavidK and Lata for the rapid responses...

to clarify, the project folders I'm referring to are the ones that are created when beginning a project to edit.
I have imported new videos, pics and audio since my VS2020 upgrade and those folders created are the only ones that I can delete or rename.
The image attached will show an example of a project folder created in a older version of VS and that folder is greyed out for options stated.

QdaDad

Thank you for the added info, I have managed to replicate this issue
I do not normally use Import / Export library options and when I do as a test I have not tried removing the individual folders.
We do not work for Corel just volunteers helping run the forums, you should contact Corel Support to explain the issue, although they well start by suggesting a re-installation.

I will also pass the details on to our Corel Video Studio dev team

Ok I imported a library to 2021 that was created using X10.
That opened ok in the program but like you I am unable to delete those folders.
I did try renaming the X10 library folder which seemed to clear the 2021 library, but when I tried again did nothing.
Then I exported the 2021 library to allow me to do a library reset, followed by a library import.
Again I could not delete those folders.

So far I have not found a solution to the delete folder being greyed out.
Its as though the library sees these folders as created by the program and not user folders.

I repeated tests using 2020 to 2021 those programs did not show this problem.
I do not have 2019 installed at the moment so cannot test, but it may be the older programs that are affected.

My only option so far to remove those folders is a reset and that will remove all folders, not what you wished to hear.

Re: unable to delete Project Folders

I have exactly the same problem as discussed at the beginning of this thread.
Background. I was using VS2019 until recently, I had purchased VS2020 upgrade but had not got around to applying the upgrade. 2 weeks ago I applied the VS2020 upgrade which sailed through OK as far as I could tell. I had EXPORTED my extensive Library contents - most of which is a fairly complex array of content held in an organised structured manner. The Library was already up at MAX folders. I was hoping in VS2020 the max limit might have been raised but it hasn't.

So having IMPORTED my Library in VS2020, now I cannot RENAME nor can I DELETE any folders. BOTH options are GREYED OUT. I cannot ADD any because I am MAX limit already. So basically I am stuffed. Library RESET fixes the RENAME/DELETE but also LOSES my Library structure, and when I IMPORT my Library the issue returns - cannot Rename nor Delete. So basically cannot ADD ANY NEW content for current projects.

I have had TWO remote dial-in sessions with Corel Support and they do not seem to able to DIAGNOSE or FIX the issue, so I am left with a tool I cannot use reliably - and cannot get FIXED by the Corel experts.

In the most recent call the support person just glibly terminated the session with no warning, no "what next", no courtesy, and no audio (since although they could hear ME, I could not hear them audibly, despite my system being used with full audio and video on ZOOM calls every single day). Thus far I have wasted probably 3 days of my time in exchanges with Corel, Zoho sessions, emails and chat to substitute for their lack of audio etc.

If anyone on this forum has any comments I will be happy to order your next fish and chips and get it delivered.

MIGHT the problem fix itself if I UPGRADE to VS2021 ???? I generally don't like to jump to newbie versions for quite a few months after first release, but could be pursuaded to try this if there is NO HOPE :(

Corel Version VS2020. PC is a Dell Quad i7 with 32GB RAM, under Windows 10 Pro.

You appear to have exceeded VS Media Library file limit. File Explorer is a much better solution for file management. From Explorer, files can be simply dragged and dropped onto the timeline. This works quite well.

Hi jowauk
From my last post I did contact Corel Development Team unfortunately no reply
“MIGHT the problem fix itself if I UPGRADE to VS2021 ????”
Well no if you read my previous reply I did test this using VS 2021
The problem is using 2019 and earlier libraries.
If you used 2020 to 2021 there is no problems, so it does appear to be a 2019 issue.

Is that enough info for the free Fish & Chips, just joking nice offer but not needed.

Personally because its a 2019 issue I doubt this will get a fix, but we can always ask.

Many thanks Trevor - the news I feared - in which case how on earth does ANYBODY move their Corel up from 2019 to 2020 without losing their Library ?

What if (given I HAVE moved up to VS2020)
1 - I EXPORT the Library from VS2020 as it stands - ALL my library structures can be seen there in VS2020 intact.
2 - I UPGRADE to VS2021
3 - I IMPORT the Library exported at 1 back into the new VS2021 environment

Your response above suggests that this most probably will not work - but if the EXPORT has taken place from a VS2020 version, might it then be IMPORTED successfully to allow DELETE and RENAME to work ?

Message me your address to +44 (0) 7831 599100 and I will get your supper delivered - I can see you are UK. If you happen to live in Yorkshire I can probably even get you the BEST proper Fish and Chips (cooked in fat and not oil). Sadly I myself am not in Yorkshire these days (Lichfield) otherwise I would treat myself as well. When will the rest of the UK fish shops return to cooking properly in fat, and get back to CRISPY fish and not soggy fish. (Personal hobby horse).

Re: unable to delete Project Folders

Many thanks tletter. VS will not let you exceed the MAX limit on folders in VS2019 or VS2020. As I said I WAS at the maximum (which I think might be 40, of which a small number are Corel standard content).

For most easy-peasy projects this doesn't really matter nor does it impact. Collate a few clips, add some titles, some music or other audio, and yes it will work.

I have a project that has been created over a period of 3 years. It renders to 73 minutes, about 5-6GB of MP4. It reviews 50 everyday driving scenarios that involve risk, and the 50 scenarios are supported by 350+ clips of road incidents, plus 50 audio MP3's of voiceover advice and guidance. There are about 90 graphics images slotted in at various relevant points - some are business LOGOS. The Library structure within VS is completely appropriate and more to the point offers editing control (IF it worked as it says on the tin). The underlying Windows folders are structured IN LINE with the VS Library folders. Much of the content has been created in complementary tools such as Viddyoze, Youzign and other similar utils. All in all this single project manages around 600+ "assets" within circa 30 Library folders, that when placed together create a seamless film. All of this has worked smoothly under VS2019 - happy days. BUT my structure is now threatened and my resulting task of having to re-construct my Library folders is a truly daunting task that will probably take a whole week of my life.

I am extremely dissappointed with the way Corel support have dealt with my issue - and from what is being said here on this forum this seems to be a well known issue.

I just want a tool to do what it says on the tin. Fine - tell me I have reached MAX Library folders. But don't then prevent me from DELETING some to make way for new content. I regard this as a VERY serious issue, and one that ALL Corel users should be made aware of when choosing their editing tool.

At the very least Corel should tell me how to get around the fault. TODAY, one of their support team connected using their Zoho tool - and then went on to RESET my Library back to default, and in the process LOST all my current Library - WITHOUT having first done an Export of the Library. I had warned them of the need to do this. Then they ended the call abruptly - BANG - Zoho connection GONE. I expect more from my author Corel.

I have tried various options to export / import libraries from 2019 – 2020 and 2021.
I had already tried your suggestion, done again but still the library folders cannot be re-named or deleted.

and yes Leeds Yorkshire

Lived in Leeds from age 4 to age 24 Trevor - return often for extended family bashes.

Looks like I am into a deep problem and loadsa work to restore my project model in terms of Library structured content spanning many hundreds of clips and media.

So HOW can anyone perform an upgrade from 2019 to either 2020 or to 2021 - if their Libraries cannot sucessfully also upgrade.

Do Corel have any formal position on this fault ?

I cannot say they do as I have not had a reply and your experience with Corel Support did not help in any way.

I have tried other options to move program files copying from 2019 to 2021 unfortunately the library structure seems to have been changed / updated which is probably the reason for this issue.

Re: unable to delete Project Folders

Post by jowauk »

I must now share my total lack of faith in being able to continue using Corel VideoStudio 2020 as my editing tool of preference. After upgrading from VS2019 to VS2020 in the first days of August, since then I have WASTED many many days of my time, time I cannot afford to waste, to get NOWHERE with Corel Support, including their Level 2 Support agent. For ALL of the last 4 weeks, and with multiple ZOHO connection calls, I informed Corel of what I THOUGHT was causing my VS 2020 to be UNUSABLE, and what I believed had caused CORRUPTION of a major edit project which has occupied my life for nearly three years. Every agent IGNORED my suggestions of ROOT CAUSE, and proceeded with multiple iterations of REINSTALL and START AGAIN - each time FAILING at the first steps. I have literally lost a full week of my life over the last 4 weeks.

Attached is a "war and peace" length PDF chronicalling my journey, which included alerting their CEO to what was going on at the Corel coal face. It was assuring that she DID take INSTANT action with her relevant EXEC colleagues, but even that has now ended with STILL NO TARGET for a FIX, and an editor that after 4 weeks I STILL cannot use to progress projects that overlap VS 2019 to VS 2020.

Conclusion: I STILL have software that I cannot use because I remain unable to either RENAME or DELETE Library Folders. As I have REPEATEDLY told Corel, the ROOT CAUSE of this situation is that A) prior to upgrading from VS2019 to VS 2020, I was ALREADY at the max limit of Library Folders. VS 2020 introduced a number of NEW Library Folders into the DEFAULT set, but did NOT increase the MAX Folders limit to accommodate the NEW Default folders introduced. SO - when (after upgrade) I try to IMPORT my (previously EXPORTED) Library contents, the system becomes CORRUPT and will no longer allow Library Folders to be deleted nor renamed. SO I cannot add any NEW PROJECT content, cannot DELETE redundant folders, whilst carrying FORWARD my current project work to the newer VS 2020 level. Corel, after WASTING 4 weeks of both THEIR TIME and MY TIME, have finally accepted that there IS indeed a problem with the VS 2020 release. BUT even from the TOP EXEC corridors of power at Corel I am told "we will fix this but we don't know when and cannot even provide any estimate of ETA for a fix". THE REASON they cannot provide ANY guidance on ETA - they are dealing with HUNDREDS of software issues and cannot prioritise mine - despite the fact that MY software is UNUSABLE with this error. I am despondent that I - ME - MYSELF had to drag Corel kicking and screaming to the CONCLUSION that MY DESCRIPTION of ROOT CAUSE is indeed CORRECT. The journey has been WAY TOO painful and SADLY I can NO LONGER recommend ANYONE to adopt this software. I am planning an EXIT STRATEGY to get myself OFF the software in the coming weeks. The issue I have suffered is unlikely to impact "light" Users of the VS 2020 tool. BUT those who are "heavy" Users, and who depend on it actually working should consider their position, in my view. I have been a VS User for over 10 years, and have had plenty of "minor" glitches especially following version upgrades. BUT this time my experience with Corel Support, in the face of being directed to the root cause by myself, has been frankly appalling and at times unprofessional.

This coming weekend will be ANOTHER 3 weeks of total silence from Corel on this TERMINAL issue with their VS editing tool. NO comms. NO updates. NO "sorry we are still working hard on it". Just disgraceful.

And yet daily I get UPGRADE offers for 2021 - as if. My ISSUE would prevent me migrating ANY current active projects forward.

Is COREL planning to DUMP this tool - that's the only impression I can draw from their TOTAL LACK of concern that MY SOFTWARE - THEIR SOFTWARE - is BUSTED with no apparent fix possible.

WHY would any NEW customer buy a key solution tool from a company that continues to behave like this ?

I intend to copy this to the Corel VS exec for whom I have email ID's - but I do not expect anything to change.
