Now i understand. With the workspace you meant somewhere outside the image , on the background where images can be.
Yes dragging a layer over there, creates a trimmed new image.
I also tried to select both layers and drag them over, but this only pulled the top layer over.
When holding in ctrl when pulling both selected layers i got both images over in one layer, but not trimmed. But they kept position which is very fine, and can therefore be used to kickstart alternative versions of what i am working on.
But it would have been better if they just had stayed on their separate layers. Maybe an addition of shift or alt could make such variations?

For a new layer - in this/my case Raster.
View - customize - Layers - then click on 'New Raster Layer' and drag it to a toolbar - layers palette toolbar or standard .. whichever is more convenient. Then it is just Shift and click on the icon. (And save the workspace!)
