Recently I was lucky enough to get away to the North Queensland outback on a train tour and the driver happily stopped the train just past a bridge, allowed anyone who wanted to take photos to get out, then backed up the train and drove it slowly back across the bridge which was great for those with (still) cameras but too slow for me taking a video.
I wanted to speed up the train in my final video to make it appear top be travelling at normal speed so applied 'speed/time lapse' by setting the speed at first to 500% (5 times normal speed). This resulted in a varying speed during playback - the train started at a faster speed, slowed down a bit and then speeded up a bit. I am sure that the actual train speed was constant.
I then changed the speed to 300% which gave a better result.
What should I watch out for and be aware of when applying faster speed?

Re: Use of Speed/Time lapse
I frequently use the Speed/Time-Lapse option and I've never experienced this, however, my video clips have a constant frame rate. Is it possible that your video clips have a variable frame rate? Posting the properties of your clip and the details of the camera might help.jparnold wrote: applied 'speed/time lapse' by setting the speed at first to 500% (5 times normal speed). In any event, you can try to correct the issue using the Variable Speed option in lieu of the Speed/Time-Lapse option.
What was the highlight of your train tour?

Re: Use of Speed/Time lapse
Thanks tletter,
ON closer examination of the video clip in normal mode the train appear to speed up ever so little at one point and I guess perhaps when speeding uo as much as 5 times it would be more noticable.
Maybe that is the answer. My video clips (from Panasonic x920M) are recorded at a fixed frame rate as far as I know (.mts 1080P 50fps)
There were many highlights of the tour. Of course the 3 trains
RM60, the Normanton Station’s 78-year-old vintage rail motor where the driver has to start the motor with a crank handle - only a 40 minute ride The Gulflander 3 car rail motor - a half day trip The Suvannahlander rail motor - a 2 day trip - in initial post
Helicopter flight over Cobbold Gorge which is on a privately owned cattle station and was only discovered 25 years ago.
The Lava Tubes (created when lava flows cool and solidify on the outside and the lava within keep flowing leaving huge empty tubes
If you ever visit Australia and you want to see the parts of the outback and ride historic railway I suggest having a look for tours Normanton to Cairns. This looks mighty like an advertisement but you did ask and the trip was far batter than I ever expected (and I don't even live in Queensland
). Maybe not quite as good as your Rocky Mountaineer though which we rode on a few years ago just very different.

As mentioned, the Variable Speed option might allow you to smooth out the train's speed.jparnold wrote: ON closer examination of the video clip in normal mode the train appear to speed up ever so little at one point and I guess perhaps when speeding uo as much as 5 times it would be more noticable.
Thanks for the info, maybe someday I'll be able to go when the gift of COVID stops giving.jparnold wrote:If you ever visit Australia and you want to see the parts of the outback and ride historic railway I suggest having a look for tours Normanton to Cairns.

Re: Use of Speed/Time lapse
I just checked out some of the videos on your youtube site. VERY impressive. You have seen some wonderful places and hopefully when insideous covid thing can be conquered we can travel again although at times I feel a bit pessimistic. The only real exciting places I travelled to are Morocco, Turkey, Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam especially the moutainness north area (Sappa). Lots of touristy places like UK, most European countries, Middle East, USA and Canada.
