32 bit or 64 bit

Post by jparnold »

I have mentioned this a long time ago and don't know if I asked the question below.
I have PSP vX2. Yes old but it does what I want BUT it is a 32bit application, I have 64bit Windows 10 and occassionally it locks up after I have close it, ie when I try and reopen it won't and I have to use Task Manager to remove the process before continuing.

Do ALL the 64bit versions (are they version X6 and later?) overcome this problem as I am willing to fork out my money (retired now) just so this locking doesn't happen?

No John -- I'm afraid it doesn't. The lock-ups still occur, regardless of the version and regardless of whether it is 64 or 32 bit. It doesn't occur to everyone and doesn't necessarily occur all the time. I happen to be one to whom happens occasionally, and I'm afraid I just have to be aware of it and close the background process in Task Manager. Annoying, but at least if you are aware of it, it doesn't take much time to get rid of the process.

Thanks Ken. I feel that Corel must know of this problem and hopefully trying to find the reason. Maybe I should never close PSP down as it seems (to me) that it happens only after closing down.

It only happens after closing down because, sometimes - and only on some systems for some unknown reason - when closed down, PSP leaves a process running in the background, which is the process you see when you open Task Manager. And the reason you have to close that process in Task Manager (when it happens that PSP won't open again) is because the way PSP is programmed you cannot run two instances of PSP at the same time. So when that extra process is still running in the background then when you try to open PSP again it thinks that another instance of PSP is running so won't open.

Corel certainly knows about it. It has been reported (including by me) for quite a few years now. But the problem is, as I said, that it doesn't affect everyone, and even those it does affect don't necessarily get it all the time...
