4k crashes
Hi. I have recently purchased a Panasonic X1500E 4k camcorder. Corel video studio 2020 crashes when I try to play or render to MP4 MOV 3840x2160 50fps clips. What am I doing wrong please.

Re: 4k crashes
On the Share page, have you enabled Hardware encode acceleration? What is it set to, and have you tried unselecting it? VS 2021, by the way, includes AMD there, but not in VS 2020 which you have.

Re: 4k crashes
First comment: what is the format of your camera recording? when the camera clip is input to the timeline: click on the clip, rt-click and select properties, screenshot that detail and post to this thread. If the program crashes when trying to input the clip that format is likely to be one that VS doesn't like.
To play in edit mode - ensure that smart proxy is enabled, and give the program time to create the proxies - it doesn't happen instantly: when done, a small keyboard-like icon shows in the timeline clip thumbnail.
To render - hardware acceleration has a reputation for issues when selected. So, if it's enabled, try turning it off for the render operation: it will take longer but not likely to cause issues.

Was there an error message? Is your file too big? In any event, you can always post to a filesharing site, e.g. Dropbox.john chapple wrote: can't seem to post a screenshot

Re: 4k crashes
Thanks for that. You will note that you have your camera set to film using the Quicktime format. That's fine, but you have to be aware that Quicktime is not automatically part of Windows or installed by VideoStudio. So as excalibur suggested above, you need to install it. Apple, which developed Quicktime, has stopped supporting it for Windows but that is because of a problem with the QT player, not the codec itself. So you can still install that manually.
But I notice that your camera can also be set to film using the AVCHD H.264 codec (which is useful if you are thinking of making Blu-Ray discs). It too gives a form of mp4 and is already on your computer
The camera can also be set to film in HEVC H.265 format which is excellent. It is an mp4 format which gives high quality video but with a smaller size. You need to install a tiny app from Microsoft which is easy enough. If you Google it, you will find a way of doing so free of charge, though I think MS only charge $1.50 for it or something roughly similar to that. The only problem with HEVC is that it requires a fairly powerful computer to be able to play and edit it.
So all three formats your camera can use will provide good results. If you decide to continue using Quicktime, then follow these instructions. They were written for an earlier version of VS but still apply. https://forum.corel.com/viewtopic.php?p=382228#p382228

Re: 4k crashes
Thanks so much for your help Ken.
Still no luck with VS. It crashes every time I import and try to play a HEVC file. I've paid good money for VS and I'm more than a little fed up with it. Just a note I installed the 'FREE' Davinci Resolve program and it has absolutely no problem playing and editing HEVC. Corel need to wake up!

Re: 4k crashes
Did an installation disc come with the camera? And if so, did you install it? I ask since in the past we found that Panasonic tweaked a format to their own slightly different specifications and earlier versions of VS couldn't handle it. But they usually supplied an accompanying disc which contained their own version of the codec.
That of course doesn't explain the fact that Resolve has no trouble but sometimes other programs can be more 'forgiving' than VS for certain formats. FWIW, on my current computer (see my Profile) I had absolutely no luck trying to play and edit HEVC, despite having installed the HEVC Extension I mentioned. Intel assured me my computer could play it. Indeed, I found that Movie Studio Platinum played it without problem. Anyway, I had to reinstall Windows for a completely unrelated problem, and all of a sudden, VS had no trouble with HEVC.
I am also wondering if you have installed Quicktime Essentials yet, and whether it improved your experience with .mov files from your camera?

Re: 4k crashes
Hi Ken. The camera doesn't come with an installation disc. I import the files directly onto my pc through the card reader. I installed quick time as soon as I got the pc with 4k in mind. It's a shame VS doesn't seem to work. I do like it but I don't think I'll be upgrading again. They need to do a fix for VS2020. My hardware can handle it but the software cant and it's so frustrating!
All the very best Ken
Thanks again for all your help
