Best practice for moving installation of PSP 2020 to new PC

Post by LiteralPhilosopher »

Hi, and thanks for reading. I'm acting as tech support for my wife, who is actually the PSP user in the house. Her PC has been acting squirrelly, and many features of PSP 2020 have been throwing errors, so I'm going to try out a new motherboard. But before I get started on that, I'd like to know what is the best and most thorough method for ensuring that when I get her back to working, she has all her brushes, gradients, textures, etc., etc., plus that the workspace and as many settings as possible look and feel the same. I want the transition to be as seamless as possible, even if it means a bit more work for me up front.

I'm not asking about licensing, etc. I get that Corel will only ever see one of her license ID online at a time, and if they start to give me trouble about installing it on too many machines, I can explain that.

BTW, the hardware information on my profile is actually for what her PC is about to be. I see that people frequently want to know about that.

So, any good advice? Thanks in advance.

It's pretty easy, though there are a few steps and there are some things that PSP doesn't have built in but we do have workarounds for. You'll want to personally look through the Folder Locations (File -> Preferences -> Folder Locations) to make sure you know where PSP is looking for files like gradients, swatches, brushes, textures, and plugins. Plugins are big as they will include plugins installed separately. Most data is saved in the User's folder, so backing that up by itself should grab most things but some might be saved in the public user's libraries or in an unexpected part of the harddrive.

Others might have a different priority list, but here's how I would do it.

1) Save the workspace - File -> Workspace -> Save Workspace
Give it a name that you'll recognize later.

2) Download and unzip these two scripts into the Scripts-Trusted folder and run them, video demonstrations are included

The first is for backing up their preferences.
The second is for backing up the folder locations (note: you'll need to recreate the folder structure to match the folder locations if you use this. Again backing up the full user profile folder in Windows is enough for most people unless your wife has some unusual folder locations its looking in)

3) Verify that the Workspace, Preferences, and Folder Locations files are properly saved in the PSP resources folder in the user profile.

4) Backup your wife's user profile, and any additional folders that match the Folder locations

5) Once you get Windows and PSP re-installed you should be able to just put the resources back. Then run those two scripts again to get the Preferences and Folder Locations setup.

6) Reload Workspace

If it all works it'll be like it was before.

Thanks, Levi! That looks terrific. And much more complete than if I'd just backed up the Workspace and called it quits. I really appreciate the effort, and I'll be sure to report back how it came out.
