They like to keep things complicated hey!
Just curious, AVC then...whats that? and should i be saving to that or MPEG4 .
My camcorder can record 4k ( limited options i dont really bother tending go for AVCHD ). So, what'd you think, recording, 1080 / AVCHD or 4k - and then editing/saving to.....? to get the better quality
Again, just curious really, likely keep saving to MP4.
Curious question what the hecktor is Share> AVC/H.264 ?

Re: Curious question what the hecktor is Share> AVC/H.264 ?
Not complicated at all....
Quite clear really especially as you own a AVCHD camcorder (Advanced Video Codec High Definition)
That format is suitable to easily create Bluray Discs, the recordings being Bluray compliant
Video Studio shows the option as AVC.H264 indicating the compression used.
A Google search will find much more info.
Mpeg4 on the other hand is more suitable for pc and internet use.
The main difference may be the frame type, avchd using Interlaced whereas Mpeg4 tends to Progressive
Take care to use the correct settings if you are converting one format to the other.
Whatever format you are creating for your final video output should be the format that you record to.
So if you are rendering to mpeg4 then record to mpeg4, your camera should have an option for mpeg4 1920 x 1080 x 30fps (25 for pal)
There is also the option from Share to render “same as first video clip”, which will use the videos properties to retain the original quality, as the settings are not changed rendering is much easier for the encoder making the process much faster.
4K video is higher quality than the HD option, much more demanding on the computers resources which may be noticeable during rendering. Not to be confused with the programs capability.
Smart Proxy may be required to help managing the larger files.
If you record a lot of fast action then 4K may be beneficial, only you can decide that.
So no problem with Video Studio

Thanks as always for the reply. But you must admit .264 isnt the catchist and in the past it just said, avchd etc
Well, it's still a little confusing, not to push the issue on here re a further reply, but i do wish VS would just automatically give you the very best settings! We are in the age of driverless cars afterall!!
Easy to say re final output weather be to bluray ( so, click on .264 and that makes a Bluray then so long as i have a disk in my PC? ) or PC use. Afterall, i am actually using the final video to then upload onto a web-based PC programme ( a online interactive magazine )..so..MP4 may be the easier way to go.....but more than happy to save to .264 if the quality is that bit better. - Questions questions..as still uncertain.
Who records to DVD,BLURAY theses days..what about direct onto a USB/stickdrive or download like i say onto another PC web-based programme / or youtube / or just to email to people so they can download it onto their own PC's to view.
It is a little...complicated..for me anyway. And really, i'm none the wiser. I would love to just press the Share button and it ( 4k footage / or AVCHD ) saves and creates a high quality video able to upload to the Wed, email as an attachment.

Re: Curious question what the hecktor is Share> AVC/H.264 ?
Mpeg 4 also uses H264 coding
I do not find it a problem
When i insert my video to the timelines I see a message to match the project properties.
You should also see that using the videos you have recorded AVCHD or Mpeg4
Then when you do Share - there is an option to use Same as project or Same as first clip- top left, a little greyed out.
That will use the original videos properties to create the new video and will be the best quality you can create
Video Studio effectively does all that for you.
Using AVCHD although Bluray Compliant does not mean you have to burn the video to disc, you could just as easily upload the video to the internet in the same way as using Mpeg4
The AVCHD are known as Motion Transport Stream MTS, this is the industries description not Video Studios, it uses a file extension generally m2t
Just to summarise
1 / From a New Project---we import our video to the timeline and see a message to Match the Properties, Yes to that
2 / Complete the editing, thats the longest part.
3 / Share - Top left for Same as Project Settings, also Same as First Clip is an option.
4 / Start - Job done, the new rendered video should be as good as it gets

Re: Curious question what the hecktor is Share> AVC/H.264 ?
And if you have problems with the idea of saying H.264 and prefer 'AVCHD', then you will be equally upset about the newer kid of the block: H.265! But you will be lucky again as it is also called HEVC. It is a newer format which produces very high quality video but with a smaller overall size. It is used by an increasing number of cameras (though thankfully usually with the option of another format of mp4). It also requires more computer power to process...

Re: Curious question what the hecktor is Share> AVC/H.264 ?
THANKS, and good to know about that 'share - same as first clip' option...ok...i will try that next time. now, i dont understand it..i mean my first clip is a black colour screen? and actual video clip is..well taken from a moving car...but i imagine your meaning the camera setting eg, it was taken in acvhd etc so...everything will match that.
Will give it a whirl.
Will give it a whirl.

Apologies. I should be more accurate in my description
It is Same as First Video Clip, the emphasis on Video.
Providing it is your recorded video then the properties will match correctly.
You should have also seen the messages that will match the project properties to your video clip.
When you do Share – check the details in the properties panel, if you have recorded to AVCHD / MTS files then those properties will reflect that.
