Unable to install VS9 patch 2005/08/12

Post by Ron Beam »

When I try to install this patch in my Windows XP Admin account, the patch fails, reporting that ‘setup cannot find the VS9 installation’. Grateful for any advice on this.

I should add that:
- I initially had the free trial download from the Ulead website before buying it on line
- VS9 otherwise runs OK and I had no trouble in downloading/installing the Smart Downloads which were available once I had paid for VS9
- I have had to reinstall VS9 a number of times because of occasional crashes: reinstallation involved deleting the original folders and performing a completely new installation
- I don’t have access to a CD version of VS9.

Many thanks

Ron

Hi Ron

Sorry but I cannot help with regards to the patch installation, except that I installed it and had problems, others on the forum are also reporting problems.

Do you need the patch??????
As Ron said ‘don’t mend a toy till its broken’

Now do yourself a favour if you haven’t already.
Copy the download of VS 9 to a CD or DVD as backup.

All the Best

Hi Trevor and Yves

Thanks very much for taking the trouble to reply. I seem to have missed the correspondence about the current patch causing problems after installation – will do a more thorough search. Pleased to hear that Ulead can provide a new URL as I don’t want to miss out on any future VS9 patch that hopefully, will fix the occasional crash.

Cheers

Same thing is happening to me. Installed the trial version, activated, then tried to apply the patch. The installer can't find VS9.

This happened after a transfer of the VS9 license from my office computer to my home computer.

It's been more than 24 hours since I emailed ulead support and no response yet. Did you get a url to the non-trial version, and if so, is it still valid?

Nope. Over three weeks and still waiting. Will send them a reminder.

Like you, I downloaded the trial and then upgraded to a full licence on line from the trial. I then downloaded the additional stuff, using an address provided by Ulead support cos Smart download wouldnt work. Most of the stuff installed ok but:

DDR 2.0 tells me that Video Studio 9 is not installed on my machine and that
I must install Video Studio 9 first. (Of course VS9 is installed and is
working fine). The install of DDR 2.0 is then aborted .

DVD Menu Bonus Pack tells me it cant find DVD Menu Bonus Pack on my system
and that I must install it first. Since this is exactly what I'm trying to
install in the first place I am a bit bemused by that one!

Support tell me to reinstall from scratch. Tried it, but it made no difference. Im convinced it has something to do with upgrading from trial version, but I have no evidence. If anyone can help I'd be grateful.

How sad. Being a software developer, I completely understand. What ulead and SoftWrap is trying to do here is a bit of a challenge.

It's interesing that I first downloaded and installed the trial version of VS9 on my office computer and was able to to activate that version and apply the update patch afterwards without any problems. After transferring that activation to my home computer, I could not apply the update patch.

For those of you wondering if the patch is even necessary, remember, you cannot activate the HD Plugin or the MPEG-4 Plugin without first applying the patch. Here's a link to that thread:

Technical support has replied to my support request and they've asked for the purchase confirmation email before sending me the new download link. It looks like the email went to Taiwan so it'll be another day at least before I hear back from them.

Follow on to my earlier posting in this link: had a very polite email from Ulead enclosing a copy of a reply they had sent me only a few days after my original request for advice (possibly my ISP deleted their reply as spam?). They have not yet resolved the VS9 patch problem, but in the interim will send me another version of the installation program once I have sent them the original electronic purchase receipt.

I forwarded my original electronic purchase confirmation to them two days ago. Still waiting for the url. They must be swamped.

Have fun downloading the new program! Those jerks will send you a link from freaking Taiwan. They kept trying to send a link from Taiwan and the download speed was like 10 KBS, we all know you cant download a 400 meg file at that speed, the connection will eventually time out. Funny thing was the tech support guy was actually acting like nothing was wrong with that. After 6 weeks of screwing around with them I finally got the chance to call customer service and had them send me a CD copy for free. I will never buy this companys products ever again. The problem with the software is, the "try before you buy" version......even when paid for, will not be recognized by any patch or upgrades that you buy. You have to get an original version of the software. I am so sick of these people its not even funny. I tried to get tech support last year for VS8 and the patch that came out for that program. I told tech support that the patch would not recognize I had VS8 on my PC. They just blew me off like nothing was wrong, so I had software for a year with no patches. Now they finally find out what the real problem is, a year later.

NEVER AGAIN WILL I PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT.

LMAO. I'm starting to agree with you. I am getting pretty tired of these people too. I waited three days for tech support to send me the link and after five hours I'm 37% into a 697 MB download. Only 10 more hours to go!

Tough choice; wait 10 more hours for a download or spend 10 more hours trying to get through to customer service.

Ulead readily admits the TBYB (True Before You Buy) software is the issue. Not sure why they wouldn't automatically spend $.49 to mail out the CD and avoid this download fiasco.

I'm evaluating Media Studio 8 right now. I was considering possibly spending another $200 to upgrade and solve all my Video Studio 9 issues. I'm such a dumb a**. :D

Jarrod and Teeinep, I agree with both of you. I have had software before that had terrible support, but it was easier to replace than VS is. The problem with VS is that it is, generally, so easy to use you get hooked, and then when you try to progress with it you run into the walls. I have reached the point that I only get stuff from Ulead on disc. I have even paid for the retail box and chanced the rebate process (hit or miss there too). The sad part is I'm hooked, and have lead others into the same situation. I tried Pinnacle, and just wasn't able to do what I wanted as easy as I could in VS.

The sad part is I am an optimist at heart and hope they will get their support issues fixed. Until then, the users on this forum give me more support than I could ever expect from a software company.

TubaDad,

I agree $99 isn't a whole lot to plunk down on software, and given that when it did work (during the blissful "try befoe you buy" period) Video Studio 9 gave me a lot of bang for the buck.

588.2 of 697.0 MB at 19.2 KB/sec; 1:33:11 remain, btw.

And I'm really liking Media Studio - a lot. I'm still a dumb a**. :D
