Thank you all, and to Ken for his comment on NTSC and PAL.

The explanation about the different frame rates for NTSC and PAL could well explain the issue. With a higher frame rate, you might expect the audio to be delayed over time on a PAL system.

As noted in me earliest message I did report that I was getting NTSC in the Current Profile list for ‘USB Video’. All the profiles for DVD and MPEG2 HD showed ‘NTSC’ in the titles, and ‘NTSC’ was shown in ‘TV system’. This was greyed out and couldn’t be changed.

I’ve checked through the various VideoStudio menus and I cannot find how to change this to PAL. I did try creating a new template, but this didn’t allow me to changes ‘NTSC’ to ‘PAL’.

I can confirm that in ‘Setting / Preferences / General’ the TV system is set as ‘PAL’. I can also confirm that the video source (a Panasonic video recorder) shows a PAL output.

The capture device is un-named.

Any advice on the significance of NTSC in the profile list and how to change it would be appreciated!

As an additional note, when installing VideoStudio I did select PAL. Luckily I'd taken a screen shot during installation, and was able to confirm this from my records.

Even though you think the footage should be Pal it is highly likely that the recorder is ntsc
There is a free piece of software called Media Info https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo
That will read and show the video properties.
Use this before importing the video to Video Studio.

Importing a video as NTSC to a VS program using Pal should not cause an audio sync issue
The setting we choose during installation sets the default share profiles, we can always change that via the setting in preferences (F6)

You mention the audio sync amounting to many tens of seconds, now that’s a lot
I would suspect the recorder and not Video Studio.

It is possible that the footage is copyright protected, if so the sync issue may be intentional, you never know what they could get up to.

Are you able to share one of your video files so we can have a look
You would have to upload to a sharing site, dropbox etc. then post the share link here.

What software are you using to capture the footage and save to the pc.

If you use Video Studio the program will capture the correct TV standard Pal or Ntsc as it scans the footage for those details, I doubt you would be able to change that from VS capture settings.

Having had time to consider the issues I'm inclined to believe that the problem lies with VideoStudio.

The Panasonic HDMI output is definitely PAL as verified on a PAL monitor, and the recorder shows PAL as it's output in settings. In addition, I don't now believe that the issue lies with the HDMI-USB adaptor as the live output on the PC is 100% OK. The problem occurs after the file is saved. It seems to me that Ken's explanation about the difference in frame rates between PAL and NTSC may well be the cause (thanks Ken).

I suspect that VideoStudio is saving the recording in the NTSC format (as shown in the USB Video profile settings). How this is I don't know as I definitely set PAL during the installation - I would have expected to see PAL listed in profile settings.

I've looked at posts elsewhere and I can see similar issues have appeared. The option I may consider is to reinstall VideoStudio to see what happens....

Thanks to all for your assistance, and for any future comments about the above.

Can you confirm how you are capturing the video
What device are you using?
I assumed that you would use the software that came with the HDMI -USB adaptor.
Then importing the files to Video Studio to edit the footage

You wrote in an earlier post
“copying to my PC via an HDMI to USB interface and hoped to use VideoStudio to edit and copy to blu-ray.”
Which indicated to me that Video Studio was used to edit and not capture the footage.

Ken also asked....
“What exactly is your capture device: can you give us a name and exact model?”
Can you clarify what device you are using to transfer / capture the video

Given the various data that's been exposed on this, it may well be that the HDMI-->Usb conversion device/capture program is hard-coded for NTSC. Which I think is what Trevor was thinking when he asked for the device specs.
In the capture program you are using, there may be a settings item that allows a choice of output format, with NTSC being the default. If there is, you may be able to change the output to PAL there.

Hi all, thanks once again for your assistance.

The recorder output is PAL, the HDMI-USB interface has no associated software or settings.

I suspect I'm not going to find an answer, so I propose that we drop this enquiry for now. Very sorry.

I'll spend my time investigating other aspects of VideoStudio and maybe come back to this when I have a better understanding of the product.

Thanks once again for your valuable help.
