VS 2021 MP4 render quality

Post by cybernick »

I am using VS2021 Ult. and my PC is equipped with NVIDIA GPU.
I have realized an issue with mp4 render which was also present in VS2020.
The render of MP4s using INTEL Hw acceleration is much more better compared with NVIDIA HW acceleration. If you render the same video with the same setting in both INTEL and NVIDIA and you play it side by side you can see the difference. Especially in 1080p 25 fps the difference is very clear. But even in higher resolutions and FPS if you check careful you can see the difference. INTEL's results are always sharper and vibrant.

Check out the attached pics which are a partial snapshot of two 4k 50FPS video rendered with the same specs. The only difference is the HW acceleration. Check the details is the table. Can you say which one is rendered in INTEL and which in NVIDIA?

This is very bothersome since NVIDIA render is faster :( Any comment?

Hi Cybernick,
I am afraid that I have always found Intel QSV video supperior to to NVIDIA harware encoding regardless of the software or system. Unfortunate since the NVIDIA encoding is faster but I always seem to find it inferior to the Intel rendered file. You can try increading the bitrate of the NVIDIA render but this doesn't seem to to help completely.

I also made a test with HEVC.
I rendered the samer 37 min video in both intel and nvidia in 4k 50fps Hevc. The video quality of Intel is way better to my eye even the bitrate in the media info is lower. Also the file size in INTEL is almost 1/3. So in HEVC INTEL wins. Is it an NVIDIA issue or it has to do with how COREL handles the NVIDIA?

Hi,
I don't think it is a Corel issue. As I mentioned, I have tried different software and systems and the NVIDIA video encoding was inferior in every case. I think that the NVIDIA cards are great for doing the heavy lifting for FX processed on the GPU while editing but for rendering the final project I will use either Intel QSV or software encoding. Others may have a different experience.

Vdanny is right. This is not a Corel issue. DaVinci Resolve Studio paid version takes full advantage of GPU Acceleration for H.264 and H.265 Decoding and Encoding. You can have up to 4 options based on hardware for encoding, Native, NVIDIA, AMD and Intel Quick Sync. I find Intel Quick Sync may not render faster than NVIDIA but definitely faster than Native and produces the sharpest picture quality among them all.
