moving selection marquee how to?

Post by chambuild »

Hi,

I've just downloaded PSP21 for a trial before buying. I used to use PSP 7 and really liked it but my computer crashed and I've lost it... time to come up to date.

So I've started experimenting and one thing I've come across which I can't seem to get to work is creating a selection marquee in order to copy a part of a photo. If I create say an ellipse, the size is perfect but I want to move the selection marquee slightly to the left for example. Not resize or change the shape just the place which is sits over the image. I've looked at the help which says

"•Using the Selection tool, right-click and drag the selection marquee to a new position.
You can also move the selection marquee by right-clicking and dragging with the Move tool ."

But when I right click the selection line it just disappears... like select none. If I get the marquee up and then click the move tool and select MOVE (M) it moves the whole image not the selected marquee. If I change the Move tool selection to PICK (K) then it does things I can't being to describe.

I can manage to add selection areas a odd shapes to it but can't just move the shimmering marquee outline left right up down etc.

I can't understand what Im supposed to do.

thanks in advance

I think this is what you are looking for (and a bit more): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBYyPa6kjRA

I suspect that you let go right after the right-click (which indeed de-selects). The docs meant to say: drag the marquee with the right mouse-button.

Right-click inside the selection, not on the selection line. You're moving the selection area, not the marquee itself. If you right-click and you're outside the selection it'll remove the selection just like you experience.

With the selection tool active, when you move the selection tool inside the selection area it'll turn into a Move Tool like compass. Then right-click and drag to move the selection area.

With the move tool make sure you're using the Right-click not left click.

But there is a third option. Edit Selection mode. There is a button on the layers palette or go to Selections -> Edit Selection

This will enter into a special mode where you can edit the current selection marquee, including using the paint brush to brush in areas, or using the move and pick tools to move and distort the selection. It'll show the selection in red using a ruby-lithe overlay. You can then use left-click with the move tool to move the selection area.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. Much appreciated but........

In actual fact I started to use PSP21 and didn't get very far. I created a 98cm x 75cm new document which was to be a collage for a poster. I pasted in about 10 photos and then the whole pc started to grind to a halt. I checked the file size and it was over 900mb..... which is odd as the collective size of all the photos was less than 20 mb. Anyway I just couldn't get any further so I did the same thing in my old PSP7.... no problem...at all.....it was as quick as its always been. I ended up pasting over 60 images or part images onto the full complement of 99 layers. PC still fine.... once I was happy I merged them all into one layer..... still fine.... no problems whatsover. The .PSP file ended up at 16.9mb which is not huge in my mind. I used exactly the same process for both applications.

On PSP7 to move the marquee I found that holding down "Alt" allowed me to move it.

So why did PSP21 fail at the first hurdle....I'd like to try the solutions above but at the moment I'm not that keen on moving up to PSP21 after crashing and burning. Any thoughts on the above.

cheers

Rob
