Video cropping for simulated green screen effect - Boris??

Post by bdefreitas »

Hello, long time VS user, like 15 years? Just installed VS 2021 Ultimate, was using VS 2018 Ultimate.

Question is... I USED TO use a 3rd party BORIS FX tool to simulate green screen, like to cut part of a video out behind someone, and make that all green. Is there hopefully a built-in way now in VS? Say someone is playing an instrument in a room, I want to get rid of all the junk behind them to I can do my own background, since they didnt use a green screen recording. Really hoping there is a way now in VS? Is there? If not, is something like the BORIS FX tool still around to use?

Thanks, Bruce

PS. I stayed on VS 2018 because for that release and the years prior, it was always crashing, like a LOT. So was hesitant to upgrade again. But I did try VS 2021 and not one crash YET.... Awesomely happy about that!

If you look in the NewBlue filters which came with VS 2021 Ultimate you will find, in NewBlue Legacy a filter called Chroma Key, and in NewBlue Elements another called Chroma Key Pro. These give you the green screen effect.

ok Ken, thanks, I'll check it out. I'm familiar with most basic greenscreen techniques if the backgraound was already a solid color, but I'm trying to replace room items, like bookcases, windows, etc... its not a basic already green background. But I just glanced at the NewBlue filters you mentioned. Lot of options, but then so did the old BORIS FX filter... :-) Thanks!

What exactly was this Boris FX you had or still have? Was it by chance Boris Graffiti which used to come with earlier versions of VS such as VS 2018? If so, you can transfer it from 2018 to 2021 by simply transferring the relevant Graffiti file from the vft_plug sub-folder of VS 2018 to the same folder in VS 2021.

Yes Ken, exactly the Boris Graffiti filter. That was PERFECT, THANK YOU. Yes I copied the "Graffiti7.vft" to the "vft_plug" folder under VS2021, and boom, it worked right away. So, whether the same functionality is built in to VS 2021 Ultimate, I at last have a good workaround, and I am very familiar with that Boris Graffit FX. THANK YOU!!!! Bruce
