PSP 2018 freezing at startup, won't reinstall

PSP 2018 Ultimate suddenly (well, to me. I have not used it for a while) started freezing on the startup screen, so badly that, while I could use other programmes, even Task Manager could not kill it. It took a reboot to get back to normal. I tried again and same result. Reminds me of a kid I saw once stick his finger in a fish's mouth and it bit him until he bled. After the crying, he went back and....

So I tried to uninstall it. The uninstaller struggled and gave up. Just froze. So I simply deleted all the folders that had PSP in them and tried to reinstall from my saved download.

It comes up with a message "Your system has not been modified. If you want to complete installation at another time, please run setup again.": a rather unhelpful message, especially as taking this advice results in the same message.

I downloaded the 2018 setup from the website, with the same result.

I would appreciate any ideas.

hmm....now all I have to do is find my rego code. Is it is Corel or the Vegas owners (Magix) that uses another company to register you?
