For that particular template (can't believe they're charging $2 for that thing)
1) Open up the template
2) Turn off or delete the top layer "Promoted Selection" as it's not needed. It's a tiny grey border around the image
3) Select the layer named "Template" This is the white border around the image and is also the white square. You can verify this by hiding it.
4) Make a selection around the square, make sure feathering is turned off. I made my selection slightly larger than the square on the top and sides, but had to play with the bottom portion to get it just right so the border was flat.
5) Hit "Delete" to remove the white square. Don't remove the selection yet.
6) Go to the "Image 2" group, then select the mask inside the group.
7) Use the fill tool, to fill the selection with White on the mask layer
You are now done and the white area should show through just fine. I have recorded the a video showing these steps. As a last step in the video I fill the selection with Grey to show you that the area can now be filled but that's unnecessary.
