Scale text box but not text

Post by rvdaele »

Hi all

I have this very annoying problem that I can't seem to find a solution to. When I try to scale a text box, it's scaling the entire text with it.

This problem occurs both when scaling with the 'selection' tool and 'text' tool active.

Nevertheless, it's still considered as a text layer. I can change the text, fonts, etc.

Can someone please help me figure out how to only change the size of the text box while keeping the text invariant?

Hi rvdaele and welcome to the forum.

This is expected, normal behavior. When you scale any layer the contents is always scaled. If you tell us what you are trying to accomplish we may be able to offer suggestions.

The normal text layer doesn't have an actual text box of a fixed size. The bounding box expands to match the text, and you use the Enter/Return key to wrap the text to a new line.

If you're using Text Wrapping, where you use either a selection or another vector shape as the bounding box for the text to force the text to auto-wrap to the next line, then you need to be using vector shapes in order to change the bounding box as those will be editable, the selection will not be. You just use the vector tools to change the shape, or scale, of the vector you're using as a bounding box.

Not sure if this is the same with what Levi suggested, but regardless of wrap mode (and/or fit to path) you can always create an extra shape BEHIND the text layer and resize it at will. When satisfied, you can select both layers (the extra shape and the text) and use the Objects -> Align menu to further align the text inside the extra shape (or drag them manually at their desired positions). When they are both in place, you can also group them together, to easily move them around as a whole (meaning, without disturbing the text's position relatively to the extra-shape).
