PSP 2018 Closes When Manage Tab Is Used

Post by Linda Lou »

After the installation of PSP2018 (32 and 64-bit) on my new computer, as soon as I attempt to use the Manage tab, PSP closes. Has anyone else experienced this? Any idea why this is happening? Will reinstalling PSP fix it?

I no longer have 2018 installed and don't typically use Manage but I'll throw out an idea. Have you tried doing a reset to default?

Hi Kathy,
Thank you for the suggestion. The first option on that page didn't work because Reset was not listed in Preferences dropdown options.
When I used Option 2 it didn't seem to work because all I got was huge full-screen ad to upgrade PSP. I tried again. <-This time I managed to navigate around the ad to find the default workspace under the ad. PSP crashed once, but after a system reboot, I think we're back too normal. Fingers crossed.

A reset is definitely easier than a reinstall, but the Corel Upgrade Ad should have been placed someplace else instead of full-screen.

Editing to add:
Never mind. PSP has crashed 3 times since I posted the above. I'll have to go back to my old computer in order to get projects done. :(

It might be a problem with one of the files PSP is attempting to "Manage". For example, a file format that PSP thinks it knows how to handle but doesn't. Or a file where the thumbnail is the problem, there was this one instance where the person thought the file was corrupt, turns out it was PSP's thumbnail reader that was the problem. Uninstalling it or adjusting the size of the file it was working on prevented further crashes.

So, to check if it's an image issue. After you reset PSP and it appeared to be working, did you direct the Manager to a folder before it crashed? Did you add any folders for PSP to manage?

I add to Levifiction's suggestion the PDF files in a folder.

No to both. No special folder. As soon as Manager opened, when my cursor hovered over my Pictures folder. PSP crashed right away. The only new things added in the last 24 hrs. were 2 brushes that I created (I've created hundreds, so I doubt that was it.) Is it possible I have too many brushes?
I'll go through my Documents>Corel PSP> 2018 to see if I notice files that don't look right.Other than that, I don't know what else to do except reinstall and see what else happens.
==============================================
I'll edit this instead of replying to myself.
After spending hours looking for .pdf's in the wrong place, and finding nothing out of place, I thought about the PSP file browser. I noticed that one of the main folders in Pictures was missing the pspbrwse.jbr so I copied it from another folder to there. Maybe it's coincidence and maybe I'm speaking too early, but after that PSP has been working as usual. I thought that file was simply added the first time a directory is accessed by PSP. I use that folder often so I don't know why that file was missing -- unless it was related to a recent One Drive issue, but that's another story.

Thank you for your help and for putting me on the right track.

Well, that wasn't it. PSP has crashed 3 times today when I first tried to use it. I opened 32-bit and was able to get more of my project done. Now I wonder why 32-bit is working and 64-bit is not.

As soon as Manager opened, when my cursor hovered over my Pictures folder. PSP crashed right away.
Does this mean that you did not even need to click the Pictures folder?

Can you in Manage mode have it open long enough to choose another folder and does PSP remain active or crash.

After closing PSP can you create a new folder on your desktop - call it New Pictures and then move everything from your Pictures folder to the New Pictures folder so leaving the Pictures folder empty.

Now open PSP and see if in Manage mode hovering (or clicking ) on your empty Pictures folder causes a crash.
If it crashes then there may be a problem with Windows.

If it does not crash then navigate to and choose your New Pictures folder. Does it crash or work OK.
If it crashes then it may be a corrupt file(s) in that folder .
Now move groups of images back to the Pictures folder and keep testing to see if a particular file(s) causes the crash.

Yes, in that instance my workspace was open. I simply hovered over "Pictures" and PSP closed.
Today I was able to open Pictures, my workspace stayed open, but when I clicked on specific folders, PSP closed.

Can you in Manage mode have it open long enough to choose another folder and does PSP remain active or crash.
Sometimes. The folder(s) that cause it to crash are different each time.
After closing PSP can you create a new folder on your desktop - call it New Pictures and then move everything from your Pictures folder to the New Pictures folder so leaving the Pictures folder empty.
Done
Now open PSP and see if in Manage mode hovering (or clicking ) on your empty Pictures folder causes a crash.
No crash on the new one and no crash on the old (empty) Pictures.
If it crashes then there may be a problem with Windows.

The last time it crashed today, I tried to click on "Workspace" so I could select one. As soon as I clicked on Workspace PSP closed. Could my workspaces be corrupt, and cause intermittent crashes, so I should delete my 3 workspaces and start with new ones?

I ended up uninstalling/re-installing PSP.
After I removed it, as I was filling out the survey, and was almost finished, up popped a huge full-screen ad to upgrade. That's probably not a cool thing to do when someone is frustrated with the program and had to remove it.

All is well so far after the re-install. ..so far... so far...
