Broadcast signal is protected from being recorded

Post by Junior »

I have just buy a Terratec Grabster AV400 with the software Ulead MovieFactor 3. I think that i have a problem with recording a VHS to my pc. The following message i get from Ulead Movie factor when i tried to copy:

The broadcast signal is protected from being recorderd and can only be viewed

How is this POSSIBLE? It's a VHS video tape with some own recorderd tv commercials!! I have also tried to connected with a macro-plus decoder to video recorder, with no result! Is there anybody with a solution? Greetings from Junior.

I have also bought a Terratec Grabster AV400 with the software Ulead MovieFactory 3.

I get the same message whatever I try to record, including a VHS tape made by my wife which includes no copyright material at all.

Not an impressive start to the use of MovieFactory.

Please let us know how to cure what is obviously a bug somewhere ASAP
as I've already wasted 8 hours and two disks on an urgently needed project.

Is there possibly another video program that can recognize the device? Maybe Windows Moviemaker? I just wonder if the problem might exist outside of the Ulead software. Maybe the tape really is unrecordable.

This sounds more like a driver issue with the card than a Ulead problem: have you checked that Ulead is set to the correct TV standard for the VHS?

Also, is there a different capture program with the card? If the card has a tuner try an off air recording, if that's ok it might be the card doesn't like VHS! My matrox marvel was the same without driver updates.

I would check teratec's site for driver updates

download the latest patch for DMF3 (300P01) and the updated drivers for Terratec. I believe its a hardware problem

I agree with keithm that this is likely a hardware or driver issue having nothing to do with Ulead.

Some people have reported that "glitches" in poor quality VHS recordings get inteprated as Macrovision signals.

There is a possibility that your VCR is putting out a Macrovision signal at all times. You could try a different player.

In order for Macrovision to "work", the capture device has an extra circuit to detect the Macrovision signal and screw-up the picture. This is sort-of the opposite of encryption... The Macrovision signal doesn't have to be decrypted, it just has to be ignored. For example, TVs don't have the circuit so you can watch the protected movie on any TV. My Hauppauge capture card apparently doesn't have the Macrovision circuit as it is not affected by Macrovision.

For some reason, the capture device is telling Movie Factory that Macrovision is present. (The capture device communicates with Movie Factory via its driver.)
