Video imported from DVDs seems to be interlaced.

Post by rnicholas »

Hello,

I am using Video Studio 9. I am importing video (clips) from commercial DVDs using the Capture -- Import from DVD feature. The first issue is that the captured mpeg file that VS9 creates crashes Windows Media Player and RealPlayer. It will play in Nero Showtime and Video Studio.

Then when I Share and Output to settings "Same as project file", the video will play in Media Player? Haven't checked RealPlayer since I don't really care.

However, it looks to me like the video is interlaced. I can see the horizontal lines -- Its not unwatchable but I can see them. It is very noticable when the video is paused.

I can't find any settings to control either de-interlace on import or on export of the video. If I export to DV (avi), I do not notice the interlacing but the file is more than 10 times the size! Is there any way to export to MPEG so that the files look good quality when played on a computer? I know I should be able to get as good quality with outputting to MPEG as I am getting with outputting to DV-AVI because the video IS mpeg on the DVD so I shouldn't be losing any quality going from that MPEG to MPEG -- it must be the interlacing, right??

Most of these clips will just be played on the computer, but some will be included in DVD movies. Thanks in advance.

Hi
After importing using dvd feature the mpeg clips are placed in the timeline.

Right click a clip and select properties, here you will see the imported clip settings.

From File / Project Properties are these identical settings.

If they are different when you go to Share – Create Video File – Select – Same as First Video Clip.

Yes, I've tried same as project file. It produces the same results. The info on the imported clip is NTSC DVD, MPEG-2, Upper Field First, 24 bits, 720x480, 4:3, 29.97 frames/sec, Variable Bit Rate (Max 9800 kpbs).

Do you mean 'Same as First Video Clip'

And are the two properties the same or different?

I have tried creating a NTSC-DVD template but video studio defaults to 8264 kbps. Unless i use the Mpeg option.

What properties were your final rendered video?

Have you tried Dvd Shrink to import your dvd???

Trevor, I tried both same as first video clip and same as project file and they both gave me the same results.

I believe all of my problems are fixed now:

The crashes of media player were due to the iviaudio.ax decoder. I had to unregister that dll and reboot and it worked -- the crash info pointed me to that file and I searched the web for how to fix the issue.

I believe the poor quality video issue was resolved simply by upgrading to the latest Windows Media Player. ? Although I also installed the latest Nero Showtime and Nero Media Player so maybe? some better codec got installed somewhere that WMP is picking up? Just a wild guess since I don't know why it all of a sudden looks fine.

Thanks for your help.
