Newbie query about deleting clips
In the middle of a video, I have an image file clip in the video track along with matching title clip in the title track and music clip in the music track.
I want to remove the image clip and replace it with a background without disturbing the rest of the file.
However, if I try and delete the clip from the video track, I get a "Clips related to the clips to be deleted will also be removed" and if I go ahead, it takes out the titles and music too! (...and closes up the gap...)
All I want to do is remove a clip from the video track - leaving a hole - and insert a different clip. All without messing up any subsequent parts of the file.
It seems an obvious thing to want to do so can anyone point me in the right direction and tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks
Steve

Re: Newbie query about deleting clips
Hi Steve
and welcome to the forums
There is an option to Replace Clip
Drag an image from the library over the existing Image clip, you should now see a tool tip
If you hold the Ctrl key, then drop the new image will replace the old image retaining any edits you have applied to the original clip.

Re: Newbie query about deleting clips
Hmm. That would only let me drop onto the Fx at the ends (crossfades). It wouldn't let me drop on top of the jpg image clip.
What I really want to do is replace 3 jpg clips (with crossfades between) with one video background clip...
Thanks
Steve

Re: Newbie query about deleting clips
Hi
I don’t understand why you are having problems. I have tried replacing clips on the top track and on the overlay tracks with Crossfade transitions and FX filters applied and do not have a problem in replacing the image clips, both transitions and Filters are retained using the new clips.
If you expand the timelines, zoom in then the clips will be a little larger, maybe that will make it easier to locate the clip.
Otherwise I don’t know what you are doing differently to me.
If replacing 3 clips you have to do one at a time.

Re: Newbie query about deleting clips
We can also right click the clip or clips for replace clip, it does allow us to replace multiple clips, we now browse the hard drive for a clips.

Re: Newbie query about deleting clips
It would help if you told us what version of Videostudio you were using - by filling in that detail in your profile and keeping it up to date - because different versions do behave a little different in the timeline
we used to get that message in some versions if you had Ripple Editing turned on - because Videostudio could not keep the correct order after you had deleted something in the middle if you had an arrangement it could not handle it gave up and decided the best thing to do was to delete everything it couldn't cope with
Check to see if Ripple Editing is active - if it is turn it off and try editing again - if successful you can turn it back on again

Am I right that it's not possible to just delete a clip and have everything to the right of it (and below it) just stay put and NOT close up the gap?

Re: Newbie query about deleting clips
You are correct that deleting a clip from the top timeline will cause all clips to the right to move left to close the gap
If you have Ripple Editing enabled then all clips to the right on all tracks will move left and should stay in sync
Are you still having problems in Replace Clip by dragging an image from the library and dropping over a timeline clip whilst pressing the Ctrl key.

Re: Newbie query about deleting clips
Yes! Right-click and 'Replace Clip' works fine and lets me replace it with an image or a video but Ctrl-drag ALWAYS drops the new image on either the start or end fade!

Re: Newbie query about deleting clips
Hi
Very odd
Attached is a quick screen recording, no audio, but it does show the action to drag and drop and the tool tip showing when pressing the Ctrl key
Is your keyboard Ctrl key working?
You are dragging from the library and not windows explorer
Try replacing a single clip on a new project to see if that works.
