if i dont have smart render and hardware acceleration selected for rendering, the program crashes.
yet when i render with them both selected i get unwanted audio clips at all the points that i edited

Not sure I fully understand and do not think this has been reported before, can you give more information, does it start rendering then cause the error/ crash or from the beginning?
With the project open in the timeline what types or audio files are you using, have you applied any filters etc.
First I would save a copy of the project before you start tweaking then you have the original as a backup.
If you remove all audio clips does the program still crash.
If you render with Smart Render deselected and Acceleration selected does it still crash.
Are you using the same types of audio files as in older projects I assume that rendered ok.
Have you changed or updated your graphics drivers, just a thought as setting acceleration seems to be part of the issue?
