VideoStudio 2020 can't open H.265/HEVC video from AMD's ReLive (only shows audio)..?

Post by TroyTheTech »

Just wondering if I'm missing something, as trying to import HEVC video clip into VS2020 (just upgraded! heh) it only sees the audio and imports it as an audio-only .mp4 file...
*NOTE: VS2020 opens H.264/AVC created with ReLive just fine

I looked in the Support area and saw that it needs Microsoft's HEVC purchased through the MS Store; so I purchased it for a buck, then restarted the PC just to make sure it 'took' and - same thing - VS2020 cannot open the video of HEVC files, it seems like? Here is what the MS Store page for it looks like now:
2020.11.15-00.28 - hevc msstore.jpg
So it seems to be 'registered' with Windows 10...

Please let me know if there's anything else I can try. Thanks!

Edit:
Doing some more Troubleshooting, it appears that it cannot open the Video stream of a clip recorded with AMD's ReLive utility (the built-in game recorder in their GPU) - but it CAN OPEN HEVC in videos created with say, third-party video editing/compression programs, like Handbrake (it opened that one, video and audio streams, just fine).
I will change the Title to reflect this.
Not sure why VS2020 can't open these recordings created with AMD's ReLive (From GPU HEVC), since other editors can - for example, PowerDirector and Vegas both open ReLive recorded HEVC files - here is an example below of Vegas opening HEVC video created with AMD's ReLive:
2020.11.15-00.35 - hevc opened in Vegas video editor.jpg
It even recognizes it as "HEVC"...

Anyway, still open to any additional ideas on what I can possibly try still, to open ReLive HEVC files in VS2020
(but VS2020 does open HEVC files, just not ones created from this one app, directly after recording, at this time it seems)

I've run into occasional problems with HEVC, not necessarily in VS but in general. You could try converting the clip to H.264 with a similar profile as a workaround. I believe HandBreak can do that.

I have just downloaded VS2020 trial in order to test compatibility with editing the ReLive videos. I have read the comments and realise that in order to do so I will need to convert them first using Handbrake or something similar.
Clearly adding this extra step is time wasting bridge too far and so I will have to uninstall the problem and continue with Powerdirector 17, what a shame that Corel cannot implement what must be a simple fix...

Hi
I have AMD onboard graphics and have seen the ReLive option in the past but for the life of me cannot locate, maybe an update has removed that or I'm just missing something.
I was going to record my own HEVC to test this.
Are you able to provide a sample recorded using ReLive, You would have to upload to a sharing site as an attachment here would be to large.

Thanks, you're right; if I really wanted to use VS for a Project I guess I'll have to do that at this time.
AMD's ReLive (GPU recording utility) can also do AVC/h.264 - which opens in VS2020 just fine - so perhaps I'll just use that, as well. [If I didn't, I'll put this in the first post]
Thanks though!

Nice idea, sure - I've deleted my little test from before so I'll make a little quick one and Upload it to Google Drive.

[It might get Deleted, but should be up long enough for everyone here to test if they want, heh]

It's just a short clip showing my desktop and this website, no audio was playing, sorry - but this is more of a test of being able to open the HEVC video stream in VS2020 anyway (See if it opens with no Video...and is seen as only an audio file...)

Here is some basic Info for the file:

Anyway, see if it opens with Video (anyone) - if it does, then that suggests something is up with just my system, heh.
I still have VS2019 installed, maybe something is conflicting? (Just thinking out loud..)

VS2020 has no problem with AVC/h264 though - and can open HEVC if I pass it through something like Handbrake - it was just something that was 'too bad' that it didn't work at this time (being able to 'just record HEVC with ReLive and Import it into VS2020 (directly)').

Thanks for the assistance, all. Take care

That clip shows only as MP4 audio on my VS 2020. It even appears with the VS audio thumbnail semiquaver icon in the library window, and Properties say it is an audio file with no video components. Yet MediaInfo gives the sort of information you included above. In other words, the same info you included in your first post.

FWIW it inserts and plays correctly in (Corel's) Pinnacle Studio 24.

Thanks a lot - that actually shows me it's not 'just me' anyway, heh

Yes, I'm glad I can open it in other video editors - I just was in the mood to use VS is all

Hi
Your details from Media Info show the video as using a variable frame rate, now Video Studio does seem to struggle using this and could be the reason for the problems.
Are you able to change the settings using Re-Live to use a Constant Frame rate, that would be the best option, if not then using a Video Converter may be your only choice.
I’ll download the sample but will be later in the day when I can test, I don’t think I will see anything you and Ken have not seen.

Thank you for your investigative interest - it does not seem like the frame rate type can be changed... There is a frame rate frequency (30 fps or 60 fps) but that is about as deep as it gets (other than choosing AVC or HEVC).

VS2020 seems to have no problem with AVC video created with ReLive (AMD GPU rec.) - and that is still VFR. Kind of interesting, but I do know what you speak of however, many editors had issues in the past with VFR, good memory, heh.

So, it seems to be something specific to HEVC only, and VS2020. Interesting little issue.

Thanks again for your input.
