Can't choose folder installation for VideoStudio 2020?

Post by VinniPereira1 »

I just installed Corel VideoStudio 2020, it did not show me where I wanted to install, I checked on Control panel and it was installed on C: drive.

I don't want it there, i want to install on a different drive.

How can i do it?

My computer:
Windows 10
Core i7-8750H 2.20GHz
16GB
GTX 1060 6GB

C:is SSD, has around 30GB free, I have other HD drives with over 400GB. I did not want it on C: even if it's a SSD.

Can I change it or it's simply not possible?

Hi VinniPereira1
Welcome to the forums
My two grand kids have the name Pereira…… Brazillian father English mother

OK

When running the stub / web installer, for 2020 the file is called VideoStudio2020_Installer.exe at 6,977Kb
You enter your serial number then proceed through the panels, one panel has 2 options to choose an installation location, and also a download location.
One is for the Common Contents folder, by default here, this folder is also used by 2019
C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Content
Some have experienced issues changing this when re-installing.???
The other is for the program installation files here:-
C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio 2020
Both of these can have their location changed, Installing to the D Drive will not move every part of Video Studio from the C Drive, there are other files and folders, some on C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel which may contain Setup files.

First you will have to uninstall 2020, then do a bit of a cleanup to remove additional folders.
Now running the stub should give the options to change the install locations

How large is your C : Drive

Personally I install all programs to their default location on the C Drive, all my personal data files, Video, Music, Images, etc are saved to another drive. At the moment I have 170Gb on the C Drive, that is oversized / bloated but can reduce to approx. 120Gb after do a thorough clean up.

Hi Vinnie,
Yes you can install VS to a custom location. But it has to start right at the beginning.
So, given you already have it installed and want to locate it in a custom location - not on the C drive (this option is one I have executed personally and pushed Corel to provide for years, it became effective from x10 . .) the first thing you need to do is uninstall the current copy.
After a clean up, determine just how you will manage the program and it's data - executable files, video, photo and audio files(I put them onto completely separate drives/folders, but not everyone agrees with that approach). Then, run the installer again and choose the custom options as Trevor outlined. Note that not everything will be installed at the location you specify especially the utlimate plug-ins - because Corel sourced them from other parties, they go onto the C drive.
Note that the download location, the program location and the content location can all be customised to a folder of your choice.

I've attached a copy of an expansion of the VS2018 user guide I wrote for a class I tutored covering uninstall/install processes. These documents also cover the installation etc of 2020, with one exception (which I have not updated them for (mea culpa)). The exception is a shared content folder, introduced for VS2019, mentioned by Trevor. That's also in the installer for 2020: once you have specified this, it's fixed - you cannot change it, for this version or any other. That's IMHO a major bug that's been commented on, but for now just note the fact and choose carefully.

If you are installing from a disk, it is likely that all the necessary programs/content have not fitted onto the disk, and when you get to the page about files to download in this case there will be a comment against that file about download from the internet: ignore it - the installer will get it, do NOT complicate things by trying to do that yourself.

I need to do this for an already working installation on the C drive, as I have no space left and want to put it on my D drive.

So I need to download another installer, but how do I keep my old projects - what should I make copies of?

Are you referring to VS 2020?

To re-install 2020 first you have to uninstall, you cannot have one on the C drive and another on the D drive.
The web Installer for 2020 is 6,997Kb, if you do not have a copy then you can download from the Update and Patches page - Trouble shooting choosing the Download link to the right
https://www.videostudiopro.com/en/support/updates/
You may be best to download the installation files again giving you the latest versions, again we have to uninstall the program to download these files again.

When we install the program on another drive not all of the program Folders / Files are moved, some remain on the C Drive, the main program files at 4 Gb ish will be moved.
Is 4 Gb a sufficient amount to help reducing the size.

If you complete all your projects then re-installing may be easier, even so not for the faint hearted.

I would think your best option would be to move your media files, Video, Images, Audio to the D Drive, this would reduce the size of the C Drive.
Running Video Studio would then prompt you to Re-Link files to the new location.
There are other program files that can be managed to reduce the C Drive, Working Folders moved away from the C Drive.

I do not have any media files on my C Drive all are saved to other drives, D and E, HD video are quite large at 8Gb minimum per hour
My C Drive is dedicated to installed programs

So what is causing your C Drive to have little space?

One reason for little space on the C drive is the allocated size for restore points. This caught me out a few years back: install a new OS on C drive and windows defaults the space for restore points to all of C - effectively, all of any spare space. What that does is steadily eat away any space you have when a new restore point is created - at the least, every time you do a windows update. And because of the setting, it does not discard any old ones. Eventually, you get windows warnings about space on the C drive. In my case, about 8-10 months after an upgrade to win10, that happened: essentially, restore points were consuming about 200+gb of the C drive. Adjusting the amount of space you assign for restore points - to say 10% of your C drive - means that when that space is filled up, the oldest restore point(s) is deleted before the new one is added. Each restore point used around 6-10gb, so depending on your drive size, you may have 4-5 recent recovery options for a software disaster.

To adjust the amount of space you will allow for restore points, use the advanced system settings option, security tab, and look at the drives selected. You can have restore points for more than one drive, but generally just the C drive is sufficient: it only saves the essential system files for a recovery. Select the C drive line to ON, and then choose the configure button to display what you already have, and a slider to adjust it. Make a choice, then click on Apply, then OK. If you are reducing the amount of space assigned, the oldest restore points will be deleted until what is left fits into the space allocation. When finished, click Ok again to exit. Re-start the PC for the new settings to be effective.

There are many ways to Clean C...
To start is with disk clean up and remove old updates..
Search for any larger then 5 MB files, and are they must be on C.
then delete any unnecessary languages from all programs installed.

@lata

Yes, running VS 2020. All programs are installed on D where possible, all personal/media files too. There is nothing else to move. The drive has been cleaned by Wndows and Norton.

After cleaning there was 15GB space remaining (out of 250GB), a few days later it was back down to 6GB - no idea why.

@Davidk

I found the Restore settings/Disc space usage. I discovered the current setting is 0bytes/ slider at 0% Figures - when I looked for a restore point a few days ago after a crash there were none available.

Weirdly my username folder uses 127GB but the only large files are in Onedrive (8GB) and Docs (8GB). What's taking up the rest of the space? I'm sorry this seems to be veering away from VS 2020 but i have so idea whats going on here and don't know what to do. I'm experiencing black screen crashes when playing a particular game but thought maybe the game or card was at fault.

Hi Mahasona
There is a small app / tool “ TreeSize Free” that shows the size of folders on the hard drive, usually windows only shows individual file sizes, so can be useful in tracking files / folder sizes.
https://www.jam-software.com/treesize_free
I have a portable version, not sure where I downloaded that from.

The other thing you need to bear in mind is that VS creates what is called a Working Folder. You'll find it indicated in Preferences > General up towards the top. The default installation is in C:\Documents\Corel VideoStudio Pro. Temporary files, project files, rendered files are all added here so it tends to fill up rather quickly. In other words, if you are worried about space on your C:\ drive, you need to change the Working Folder to D:\ as well as everything else.

Mahasona,
I am a bit confused by the folder sizes to mention. Your profile says you have 1TB but in your post above you say you have only 250GB. You also state your Users folder contains 127GB. If that is correct what are you storing there that takes up so much space?

That's the D drive. C is 250GB of which only about 6GB is free.

The 127GB of used space is me adding up all the folders and anything on C

After reading "re-installing may be easier, even so not for the faint hearted." I'm inclined to leave things as they are, I've used disc cleanup and Norton Utilities to free up space but doubt I'm techie enough to do any more. All media files and other programs are on D. VS 2020 was about the only identifiable way of getting more space even if it's only 5-6GB

Thanks for your help guys.

Re: Can't choose folder installation for VideoStudio 2020?

If you have existing projects that are needing completion you may run into trouble by re-installing the program on the D Drive.
Video Studio installs folders all over the C Drive, some would be moved to the D: Drive but some remain on C:

We do know of some that you can re-locate to the D Drive even though the program resides on C:

C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Content
This folder is used / shared by all versions from 2019, it contains the library samples / templates approx 2 Gb of files.
The C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Content\Samples\Video folder is 1 Gb
If you do not use these files you could remove to save space although your library may need a Reset.
However if you have used these files within your project, those will need to either remain or be re-linked.
By the way installing 2022 does not populate this folder, thats another story, but just to say that it can be removed providing you are not using it.
Try re-naming the Corel VideoStudio Content folder to "Corel VideoStudio Content_old" then run Video Studio, your library will show clips needing relinking.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel
This folder may contain some setup files for Video Studio 2020, Can be removed after installation, I do not know how large this folder is, things have changed over the years.

Program Folders
Smart Proxy files, if you do use Smart Proxy these files can be very large.
C:\Users\UserName\Documents\Corel VideoStudio Pro\25.0\SmartProxy - Delete these files.
Go to Preferences (F6) - Performance tab - relocate the Proxy Folder to your D Drive - re-create the proxy files.

Programs Working Folders
As mentioned by Ken, re-locate your working folder to your D Drive, the size here depends on how you have used the program.

Reinstalling VideoStudio to D Drive
This folder "C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio 2020" is the main installation folder at 3/4Gb will be installed on D Drive.

Mahasona ---- did you manage to use the TreeSize Free app to show the folder sizes, It is worth using.
When my my grand kids visit they use the computer, Yesterday I found a folder at 36Gb, one of their game folders, using Windows Explorer just does not show the folder size, well not in a tree list.
The app should easily id where your Gb are being used.

Post Updated
Just remembered another folder…………
When we run the VideoStudio2020_Installer.exe 6,977Kb to download the programs installation files, by default saves the files to our Desktop in a VideoStudio2020 folder, these are large at 6.5Gb ish.
We can allocate a download folder prior to installing the program, I have these files saved to my D Drive.

Just an extra note on lata's last suggestion. Those installation files are located in the Program Files (x86) folder, not under Program Files. So look in C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel VideoStudio 2022 for the current version.
