I need tutoring for color change

Post by jparnold »

I have two video clips taken of a silk weaving machine from two different angles and because of the different lighting the color of each one looks quite different and I am trying to work out quickly without heaps of trial and error which filter to use and how to use it.

After searching YouTube I found and followed one tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhiqpEGNsYI and used 'color correction' for the second clip I then selected white balance, chose the eyedropper tool to select part which should be white which didn't seem to make any difference and so I then selected type of lighting as 'fluorescent' which is almost what I want but still not a silver like color you see in the first image. I then dragged the color temperature a little 'higher' and also the brightness.

Is this the best way to achieve what I want - color match one video clip to another.

Here are images taken from each video clip and the first one is the correct color ie I want to change the color in the second video clip to closely match the first.

Hi John
I would have thought the White Balance would be the thing to use

Your profile shows you running X10, not sure that had a colour Correction
So which version are you using and can you update your profile.

Hi Trevor

My profile is correct.
X10 has color correction (double click on video clip and select 'color correction) which has white balance with preset color temperatures as well as a slider tool to change color temperatures to whatever you want, and also change hue, saturation, brightness, contrast, gamma.

Regards John

Try this. load and copy the FX.
the front loom has a warm light on the right vs cold on the left.

Hi John
Sorry for the confusion on my part, Interesting how the panels have changed with the later versions having a series of tabs across the top of the UI

FX Filters
There are two filters that may help, FX Auto Levels and Auto Exposure, the first option certainly gives a bit of a punch to the images, especially image 2

I only have the still image to go on, the effect may differ using the video?

Next time you record in a similar environment it may be best to manually set the Cameras white balance, then the auto wont have any effect and you should get more ever exposures.

I used it just very litely to remove tiny red after the white balance.

Thanks Adi and Trevor,

I agree with Adi that the front loom has a warm light on the right vs cold on the left.

When I applied the -2% red with the colour balance filter it only corrected the left side. I note that (from his vsp file) that he was able to change both sides but not sure how he changed the right side (I could do that with Paintshop Pro but not VS).

I have attached a clip (rendered as MOV to reduce file size) of the clip I am trying to change the color to match the silver look in the first image I 'published' just in case you have time to exercise your skills.

BTW I usually leave WB on my camera set to automatic which seems to work 99% of the time. I think with this video 'shot' I moved from a place where there was mostly artificial light to one where there was more natural lighting and didn't notice the difference on the LCD monitor. I usually use my camera when on tour and often need to keep up with the tour guide and so just leave WB on auto. To use manual WB I need to take my foldout pure white 'sheet' and 'point the lens' at the object which I often don't have time to do.

Thanks
John

A mask with a second tweak will get it there.
I see your shot is steady, I'll try it tomorrow when I'll be back home.

Thanks asik1
You have 'pointed' me to another feature I did not know about - masking.
I am familiar with the Paintshop Pro selection tool and have used it quite a bit and it seems from a quick look that masking creator in VS is similar.
I just need to experiment to see which masking tool is best to use and I will search Youtube for tutorials.
In the meantime if you have time do not hesitate to try it for me and advise.
Thanks again

How is this?
I decided not to use a mask.
How it will live with the 3'rd shot?

You are a champion asik2.
My thanks and best wishes go out to you. I will buy you a Goldstar if we ever meet.
Obviously it's just a case of trial and error (to get such things sorted out) and I was hoping that there was something easier.
Would you like to explain what you did to achieve the result? Did you use the color picker and if so what part of the image did you 'pick'.
Thanks again

The starting point John is contrast.
For that a lower saturation was needed
Then I went to picked the warm part.
Then mid tone gamma and brightness
As I still got warm cast I placed the RGB FX to get a bit of cold as the first shot has.

* While Goldstar is doing fine, Tooheys Old looks interesting.
