Copy a photo and paste beside

Post by Peem »

I want to reproduce a photo of a pattern and paste it beside the original a few times across and down to create a more extensive pattern. Any suggestions please? Peter

Hello,

Right off the top of my head I can think of 2 ways, working in the Complete workspace...

Method 1 (Pattern Fill):
- Open the original photo
- Create a new empty canvas (File -> New) with the desired full dimensions, next to the original photo
- With the empty canvas active, Click either the Foreground or the Background swatch in the Materials Palette
- Go to the Pattern Tab & select the original photo from the displayed list of thumbnails
- Still in the Pattern dialog, adjust the Scale/Angle settings as needed and hit OK
- Use the Flood Fill (F) tool to fill the empty canvas

Method 2 (Objects Alignment & Distribution):

- Create a new empty canvas (File -> New) with the desired full dimensions
- Bring in the original photo as a layer
- With the Pick tool, align it with the top-left corner of the Canvas (Objects->Align->Top & Objects->Align->Left)
- Duplicate the layer as many times as many columns fit in the canvas (minus 1)
- Select all layers and Distribute them horizontally (Objects -> Distribute -> Space evenly Horz.)
- Group all the layers
- Duplicate the group as many times as many rows fit in the canvas (minus 1)
- Select all groups and Distribute them vertically (Objects -> Distribute -> Space evenly Vert.)
- Ungroup the Groups (if you don't want them).

Thanks migf1,
I use the program so seldom I spend more time relearning than doing the task, so appreciate your detailed reply. Peter

Method 1 in migf1's suggestion is really very quick and easy and well worth the effort if producing a background for something. I don't use PSP every day and then mostly for touching up photos but the tiling facility is handy to have.
An example is here:
Picture of original - a shopping arcade, seamless tile and result
Picture of original - a shopping arcade, seamless tile and result
The middle image is a seamless tile produced from the original. This step is optional but does help blend the tiles together.
(Find seamless tile in Effect/Image effects/Seamless tile. I recommend saving the resulting tile image with a distinctive name as it is then easier to find in the list on the Materials Properties dialogue. Getting a good effect does require a bit of trial and error, though.)
Just as a reminder, the workspace has to have the Materials Palette showing. Key F6 is a short-cut.
Materials Palette and Properties

As my tile is quite large, I have chosen a small scale and used an angle of 45 degrees.
Hopefully you will find this useful but even so, it may help others. I remember struggling with seamless tiles as the PSP help is not very explicit. The effect is not very useful in its own right but only in producing a tile for later use.
