able to import MKV in VideoStudio ?

Post by brouillette »

Can anyone confirm that we can import MKV in VS ?
I tried with my recent VS2019, it does not show the MKV files when I try to add to library (all other video formats are listed in the drop-down box, but not MKV format, or files are shown). I tried with VS2018: same. I loaded VSX10: same.
I then tried with Cyberlink PowerDirector 19 and it works great !
What's wrong Corel ? Has anyone imported MKV in VS as mentioned in Corel specs ?

I don't have 2019 but my MKV files import and play in 2018 without any problems - can't explain why you can't see them in the drop down when you want to import mine does -- have you tried "All formats" do they show then
Have you also tried just dragging from File Explorer straight into the timeline - that also works for me in 2018 - can't believe that 2019 is not able to

Thanks BJC !
at least I know that it is feasible. I tried drag & drop also, but I get the "not allowed" icon (circle with cross bar). When I use import to the clips/video library, no MKV files are shown to select from the dialog box even with "all formats" selected. Also no MKV file format is shown in the import format drop-down box.

The MKV movies are in standard MKV format from blurays converted with makeMKV (which is widespread method), to then edit and convert them to smaller MP4 using VS.

So it should work under VS (it does with Cyberlink PowerDirector)

I will remove all copies of VS on my PC and reload a fresh one to see if it solves my issue.

But glad to see that it works in VS, thanks to your input.

FWIW you can also import and edit MKV files in VS 2020 without trouble, including ones made with H.265 video. Like BJC I have been able to edit MKV for several versions of VS now. And MKV is certainly listed as an importable file in the Insert Media Files > All Formats dropdown menu...

In my case, some MKV files can be ingested by VS2018/VS2019 whilst others can't and therefore must be converted. However, all these MKV files, play fine in video players.

There's more than one way to do many things in VS. And using the library to import clips of any sort is really 'old school'. Drag n drop using explorer is another way. But the way I've always done it is to rt-click in the timeline space, and you get a list of options (video, audio, music voice etc) to import. Click on video, and you get a navigation panel to locate the clip or clips you want, select them, OK, and they will appear in the TL track for that clip type.

As to loading MKV, I used it once several years ago and it worked fine. At the time MKV was an alternative to a format that VS had some issues with. the only reason I can think of whereby VS would object to an MKV is if that clip was somehow non-spec, despite the filetype in the name.

Hi Guys
for what its worth I can no longer import MKV files to 2020 nor 2019, Have not tried other versions as yet, just the latest.
The Open Video File panel does not show any MKV files available to choose.
The all Formats list just does not show MKV as being an option.

I think that is what the OP brouillette was referring to
Strange as I have not had a problem in the past

Hi Guys
I checked my system and could not find Matroska installed
I ran the MatroskaSplitter.exe from 2019 installation files and I am back in business

brouillette -- check here C:\Program Files (x86)\Haali\MatroskaSplitter

Trevor
same issue as mine.

I cleaned up VS and reloaded fresh copy. Now I can import MKV files and it is in the drop-down format list

But no audio in VS or W10 "film & TV" player

On internet, I understand that I have either to convert MKV to MP4 to solve, or convert the audio codec from DTS to AC-3 within the MKV container to solve, but not obvious to do.

Anyone has a better or easier solution to this no-audio problem ?

Having to convert videos before import in VS is really annoying, as I don't know of any Windows-based tool doing that and don't want to pay 30$US+ to get some shareware tool.

Most members here use Handbrake for converting, it's free

I use ffmpeg to convert clips. it becomes a oneliner if you are always converting from the same source to the same target format, so that's free too.
