Should I upgrade?

Post by john chapple »

Hi guys, I have used VS for several years and I'm thinking of upgrading to VS2020 but am weary due to issues encountered with the program by users on here. Can someone give me advice as I don't want to waste my money if the thing has not been fixed. Thanks. John

Judge for yourself either by trying the trial version or buying a copy and exercising the 30 day refund offer if required.

Your profile lists the following system specs:
  • operating_system: Vista Home Premium
  • processor: AMD phenom 9550 Quadcore 2.20GZ
  • ram: 4GB
VS2020's System Requirements include:
  • Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, 64 bit only
  • Core i3 or AMD A4 series for standard videos. Intel Core i7 or AMD Athlon A10 for HD and UHD videos
  • 4 GB or higher, 8+ GB highly recommended for HD and UHD videos
Hence your system doesn't meet VS2020's minimum system requirements.

There may be problems depending on your environment and system.
I think VS 2020 is very stable.
I am using it without any difficulty.
In my experience, computer systems have a lot of influence.

It depends on what you want to do with the program.

What version are you using?
What is it about that version that you think falls short - eg a feature that you'd like but isn't supported in that version? is it available in the latest version? are there any reports about it in the forum???

The local PC environment should not be a factor - but it often is, regardless of what Corel says. You will find many comments in this forum expressing opinions that Corel treats its users as beta testers, and support for bugs reported is non-existent.

Nevertheless, if you want to upgrade, at this late stage of the year, wait until the current version is at it's most reliable (all the service packs for the version year have been published) and the new version is due for release, and then buy the current one - there are usually good deals for it starting in december running thru late january. So you get a more reliable version at a cheaper price.

Also, your profile lists the OS you use as Vista. VS2020 doesn't support Vista, so in addition to the editor you would have to upgrade your OS as well. it might be easier to get a new PC.

I have lots of silent crash problems in VS2020 Ultimate, but I had it also in VS2019.
As I have learn from this forum the silent crash program will continue to stay with us until Corel will do something.

Sorry, it should be: ....silent crash problem (instead of program)...

Saying "silent crashes" without giving a "recipe" to create them does not help. If you provide the project (small) others can see if it's a global situation or just a "you" situation.

For what it's worth, I had VS 2019 Ultimate and recently had a pretty simple project with several GoPro clips. I tried various options to try to render this project and kept getting error messages or "silent crashes" (I assume a "silent crash" means the program closes with no error messages of any kind). I decided it was time to upgrade to VS2020 Ultimate as I had been thinking about it for a while (there was a "flash sale" with good pricing). After the upgrade, that project (exact same VSP file) rendered first try with no problems.

Hi David. I have recently upgraded my pc. It's now Rizen5 3600 6 core processor 3.59 GHz 64bit with windows 10 pro. I currently use VS5 which I like, but would like some of the features found in 2020 like more titles and effects. Vs5 is very stable but not that suited to windows 10 so I am just trying to get feedback before upgrading.

Regarding the last comment by asik1 and to John Chapple's point, if you upgrade, it is entirely likely that the VSP project files will not open on newer versions or throw the dreaded 'silent crash'.

I purchased a new editing system to upgrade and now have two other machines running two previous builds of VS. Certain repeat clients have old projects and have a budget to revise, but not to rebuild. The time and cost to recreate old VSP project files to keep up with Corel's software updates in unsustainable.

I too am faced with another choice to upgrade my VS2019Ult version to the 2020. Installing the 'demo' unit on previous systems always seemed to corrupt the current working build. So I never got a fair test and was inadvertently forced to upgrade because it broke the previous install. Usually a registry error.

It is good to read the few positive reviews regarding the stability of the 2020 build. The silent crashes have made working in VS a bear and I've been transitioning to Premier, no matter how much I hate what Adobe, my former client, has become with their subscription model. But I digress...

QUESTION: HAVE YOU UPGRADED TO VS2020 from VS2019?

Can you definitively state that VSP project files will in fact open and are actually editable in the most recent build? This is the core issue stopping me from upgrading and I'd appreciate the thoughts of this user group. Thanks!

One of the CONS in PCmag.com's recent testing of VS2020 was "Occasional crashes in testing". As such testing is very limited, it doesn't bode well that VS2020 crashed enough to be commented on. As VS routinely crashes, saving after every edit is the safest approach to working with VS especially since VS2018 and newer. Sometimes even this is not enough as VS occasionally corrupts VSPs when saving such that they can't subsequently be reopened.
stevef wrote:QUESTION: HAVE YOU UPGRADED TO VS2020 from VS2019?
No I won't pay for an upgrade to VS2020 or future versions unless Corel addresses the stability and reliability issues. The number of huge patches that Corel issues following each recent VS release shows that QA is not a priority for Corel. As well, VS2020 doesn't support saving to an earlier VSP format, hence if you create a VSP in VS2020, there's no going back which can be a big problem.
stevef wrote:Can you definitively state that VSP project files will in fact open and are actually editable in the most recent build?
For quite a while now, you couldn't guarantee that a VSP created with an older version of VS could be opened in a more recent version of VS. This is because of compatibility issues with certain depreciated features/filters that were applied to video clips in older versions of VS. It's due to potential compatibility issues that older versions of VS are needed to guarantee that VSPs created in old versions of VS can be opened and edited without fuss.
