Save trimmed video?

Post by SteveMartinUSA »

What does the "Save trimmed video" option in the File menu do?
  • Can a Trimmed Video save clutter, make subsequent effects more stable, ...?
  • When would I use Save Trimmed Video?
  • Is the "Edited File" a video?
Saving trimmed clips
Frequently, when you make changes (i.e., after auto-splitting clips using Split by Scene, extracting clips using Multi-trim Video, or manually trimming clips), you may wish to make a permanent change to the clip and save the edited file. Corel VideoStudio gives you a margin of safety since it saves the trimmed video to a new file and does not alter the original file.

To save a trimmed clip
1 In the Storyboard View, Timeline View, or the Library, select a trimmed clip.
2 Click File > Save Trimmed Video.

'Save trimmed video' is used only for those actions described in the part you quoted above i.e. after auto-splitting clips using Split by Scene, extracting clips using Multi-trim Video, or manually trimming clips. So if you have a video clip in the timeline and do one of those things, then Save Trimmed Video should be available.

But not for the sort of thing you asked about in your other thread on this subject: https://forum.corel.com/viewtopic.php?p=381645#p381645 It only applies when you are actually trimming, cutting or otherwise breaking up a video. In that sense trimming is different from "editing" as you use it. Editing in an NLE like VS includes things like applying filters, transitions, music, sound effects etc to a video. They will produce a new video if put through the Share process, but otherwise the original video remains completely unchanged and available for future projects. Even after Share, the original video will still be there untouched.

And yes, Save Trimmed Video creates a new video clip.

What would you do with a "trimmed video"?
When would you generate an intermediate video clip to be used later in the project?

Most trimming would be done towards the start of a project, when existing video needs splitting or shortening, or you've captured one long video and need only a couple of scenes out of it, or want all the scenes but want them to used in various parts of the project, not consecutively. Of course you can shorten a video without creating a new video, but you might, for instance, think having that new clip might be useful in one or more future projects, so you create it.

Can you edit video once it's in the Split Screen Template, or would a "Trimmed Video File" be a better option?

Saved Trimmed Video is a means of creating a copy of any video file, usually we cut or trim the ends of a video reducing its length.
File – Save Trimmed Video will render a copy of that section using the original video file.
The new video being saved to our working folder with a clip placed in the library.
There are limitations to its use and the big No-No is applying any effects, FX Filters, colour correction, in fact any effects
The clip has to be in its raw state other than having its length trimmed.

If you wish to render a clip that contains effects or filters then that is rendering the project or a section of the project, Ken Berry mentioned this option in one of his replies.
Here we can set the Project Preview range which shows as an orange bar above the timeline
For more info press F1 or Help-Help Topics / User Guides
I also have some info here regarding setting the Preview Range among other settings.

That's the most complete description I've seen for "Save Trimmed Video"...Corel should have you working on their manual--thank you!

I've had stability issues (CRASH) applying subsequent effects to a Time Remapping, for example. Would you Save Trimmed Video to create intermediate files and use those in a Time Remapping or Split Screen? Or might you render those manually with all effects applied before using them in such a project? Or maybe there are fewer such crashes in 2020...?

I haven't had a single crash on my current project (in 2020), which is refreshing.

Hi
If you were to use Split Screen, that by default uses an image placeholder, usually black, we can replace that placeholder with any Image whilst using the Template Editor, or replace the clip back on the timeline, works very well when using images.
Generally the Split Screen effect is relatively short, an intro for instance.
We can also replace the place holder with a video clip, they can be any length and would need cropping / trimming to match the length of the intro.
If we were to use the clip on the timeline, trim the video to match the length of our intro, use Save Trimmed Video, the resultant clip could be used in Split Screen with little or no further editing.
Lets assume you have a 30 minute video, you create a Split Screen having 4 sections, now you wish to use 4 separate parts of that 30 minute, You can either add the clip 4 times, then locate the sections you want, I would think a little difficult to do.
Or using the clip on the timeline you could select sections of the clip – Save Trimmed Video, In fact that could be done with the clip in the library. Now you have 4 separate video files to use in Split Screen.

Save Trimmed Video is just another tool that is very useful under certain circumstances.
Clear as mud

Good to hear that your program is working well
