2020 Ult Crashes When Opening Font Selection Box

Post by efkay »

Earlier this evening I installed 4 new fonts into Windows/fonts and had no problems using the new fonts on the graphic I was creating. I made multiple adjustments with positions and sizes of the letters without any issues. I then created a new files of 1000px x 1000px with a transparent background but when I went to select a particular font from the dropdown selection the programme just shut down on me.

I tried unsuccessfully to select any font but each time the programme crashed.

In the end I uninstalled all 4 fonts - all had worked fine earlier - but the crashes kept occurring whenever the dropdown font selection was activated. On each occasion I hadn't got as far as highlighting any particular font - it appeared to 'time out'. Holding the shift key down whilst restarting 2020 Ult made no difference.

This is a fresh installation onto a new SSD with Win 10 Professional.

Any thoughts as to why this is happening?

Welcome to the forum!

No idea why it's the fonts causing the crashes. Someone else may have ideas about that. But the first thing I would do is reset the program. Hold down the Shift key when you click on the desktop PSP icon to open the program. You'll be asked if you want to reset. Say OK. Make you first save any customized workspace before you do this. Otherwise, it will be lost in the reset.

Thanks for your welcome and quick response.

I had already reset the programme prior to contacting the forum, but to no avail.

Maybe someone else can come up with some likely causes/remedies.

I think efkay has already done that and made no difference.
When the 4 fonts were uninstalled did the program behave normally again?
If so then it may be necessary to install the new fonts one at a time, run the program for a while and check if one of them is causing the problems.

Unfortunately removing the fonts made no difference, which propmpted my joining the forum and seeking advice.

In the meantime I have done a simple hard re-boot and selection of fonts appears to have been resolved. Memory overload?

That said, I will re-install the same four fonts that set this off in the first place and see whether they were indeed the culprits.

This issue seems to have been resolved by simply doing a hard re-boot of Windows 10. Anyway, so far so good.

In the General Program Preferences | Miscellaneous section the Clipboard data is set to Delete on exiting the programme. When PSP was crashing when trying to select a font, would that crash process have actually emptied the Clipboard? I'm no IT technician but is it possible that the Clipboard wasn't being emptied until such time as I restarted Windows?

May I just add a piece of advice. I have only recently swapped my IDE HDD for a SSD as the original Win 7 installation was becoming unstable. I went to great pains to ensure I had all my data and settings backed up, had printed off emails with programme software licence details, listed out the names of the various downloaded programmes I would need for the new drive etc etc, before handing my laptop to the technician to effect the work.

The one thing I didn't do was to backup my Windows/Fonts folder.

I was fortunate that my HDD wasn't going to be reformatted, so the old HDD is accessible, as is, via an external drive enclosure where I have been able to copy across those fancy fonts I had previously downloaded/worked with in the original PSP 2020 installation.

Just remember to backup your Fonts folder if/when upgrading your computer.
