Paint Brush Not Working

Post by roadroamer »

Hi, I'm having trouble with Paint Shop Pro 2020 and the paint brush. When I open any image and select the paint brush tool, it will only paint on objects in the image, not on the blank background. When I color on the background area (blank area), it will not show up. Also the paint brush seems to be very opaque but the opacity isn't turned down. I'm not sure what setting was changed, does anyone have any idea what I may have changed, or if it's a glitch? I've tried shutting down the program and restarting, as well as installing new updates but it hasn't worked. Thanks for your help!

I made a paint brush mark on this with navy blue across the image but the paint brush marks are only showing on top of the tree object, not on the blank background.

I don't see anything being off in the screenshot (at first I thought that maybe you had turned on the transparency lock). You can try resetting PSP by holding down the Shift key when launching it, but you may want to save your workspace first, so you can load it back, after the reset.

I think I found the answer. The brush was a saved setting so I changed it to the other saved brush setting. Strange the new brush only worked on objects and not on the background. Thanks for the tip!

That's indeed strange, I really have no idea why is that. I'm glad though you solved it :)

The only way I could get the same problem you had was to make a selection with Match Mode set to All Opaque.
Then in the Selections > Hide Marquee (or Control Shift M)
Then the painbrush is limited to painting only on the selected opaque areas of the image.

Yes, when 'Lock Transparency' is checked, the behavior is what is observed.

Thanks, that's useful to know for future reference. I can actually use that quite a bit.

Well the same problem is happening with me, using PSP2020. if i paint with a brush, say a star to do a glitter effect of the sun reflection on metal, and apply i get a dot where i place it, if i move it over the image and apply it elsewhere the star comes out, yet if i use say a round brush and paint anywhere this works fine.
I work with mainly 3d images and its like the brush is painting on an object and not the image, this is the case with a layer and the original image going to have to do a screen shot

The screenshot helped. Un-tick Smart Edge and you should be okay.

I really don't know what is going on there (also I don't think I've completely understood the exact issue you are having) but can you try a couple more things?

a) Try to zoom in and out just in case it's a redraw issue (sometimes this helps)
b) Try opening the Brush Variance palette (F11) and check the settings in there (you can reset them to default values, by hitting that curved arrow, in the bottom-right corner of the palette.

Btw, what is the format of the background image you are editing? (I mean, is it png, jpg, tif, 8bit, 16bit?)

Background was on a jpg, then a raster layer on top, as i said a normal brush you can just paint over any part of an image, but change to a shape of any kind and it paints behind, then over, Part of the brush will disappear just don't know what has gone on it worked before no problems.

If you've checked everything already suggested in this topic and the issue persists, the only other thing I can think of is for you to provide (if possible) that image and 1 or 2 of your custom brushes that give you trouble, so we can test on our systems, hoping we can find a solution.

You can pack them in a zip file, and then attach it to your post. Or if the zip file is too big for the forum, you can upload it to any of the several free file-hosting sites (like Mediafire) and give us the D/L link.
