GoPro GPS

Post by Pete Waterman »

Good morning all.
Does anyone know if it is possible to use a GoPro file and extract and use the GPS data as an overlay?
Up until now I’ve used the GoPro Quik program to set the GPS as an overlay, save the video then use VS 2019 to do the edit.
The GoPro Quik has now (since a windows 10 update) refused to work, GoPro is telling "We would also like to inform you that the Quik for desktop app is no longer in development as it became a legacy software since May 20, 2020." Not very helpful.
I’m now stuck hoping to find a simple solution?
Thanks

VS will no help you, google for any Video converter that might, or go to the gopro's forums.

Try running your app in Windows 10's Compatibility Mode.

Hi Pete,
I use an Olympus Tough TG-Tracker which captures GPS co-ordinates and has an accelerometer, temperature and barometric sensors. To capture all this data and overlay it on my videos, I use a software program called RaceRender. Currently, it is probably the best telemetry video software on the market.

RaceRender allows you to build your own customised overlay of charts, gauges and snail trial maps. Once your template is designed, you green screen the whole thing and render it as a video file. RaceRender does have a simple editor but you are better off importing the RaceRender overlay into VideoStudio and editing the footage there.

You can trial the software for free.

Hi Pete,
Thanks for the link. I wasn't aware of Race-Technology. It has a 30 day trial so I guess you can trial both and determine which one suits your needs. I'm quite happy with Racerender and it works with my camera so I highly recommend it. For some reason I couldn't find the cost of Race-technology. Do you know how much?
