Re: How to Use Pro X8 on Computer With Small C Drive
Hi everyone. First, I always uninstall a program in the Control Panel. My TreeSize Report on 10/29 showed Program Files 12.5 GB, Program Files (x86) 10.1 GB, but ProgramData was 66.2. I don't see a folder called ProgramData so I will be tracking that down too. The Users Folder was big too. The Windows Folder is also big but MS Help yesterday had 657 or so people in the chat line ahead of me! So I will work on those big files once I get Pro X8 fixed for good.
Later I went into Programs, and Programs (x86) to do some house cleaning. I ran into that nagging problem from TrustedInstaller while trying to remove old Internet Explorer files that I don't use. I looked into the Microsoft Forum (I knew I tried to remove IE files before) and the instructions were old, so I quit going down that rabbit hole. The last thing I did yesterday was re-download Pro X8 from the link Corel sent me. I noticed I had the option to put the program where I wanted to and ALMOST put it on the D Drive. But I downloaded it to the C Drive and thought I would ask if putting it on the D Drive was an option. Is the D Drive an option for Pro X8?
I never knew 14.0, 15,0 and 18.0, represented VS X4, VS X5 and VS X8! So IF I was working on a project and upgraded to VS X5 or X8 before I finished the project, it sounds like I created a mess. I can move the 14.0, and 15.0 files over to my external hard drive on my desk (my private cloud) and then see if I really need those old files later since most should be in one of my completed movies.
Today I am editing the Pro X8 preferences like you guys instructed me before, and hope I get that done correctly. Then I plan to open my current project and see if I can drag a transition down to the Video Track. When I tried that after re-downloading Pro X8 the last time, Pro X8 closed - kicked me out. We are sheltering in place and my goal is to get Pro X8 fixed so I can edit all my videos that are waiting for me. Then in 2022 I will be ready to travel and shoot videos!

Re: How to Use Pro X8 on Computer With Small C Drive
Hi
You should download the Video Studio installation files to the D Drive, that keeps the C Drive as small as possible.
The Program Data folder having 66Gb is the concern, I assumed you could see that folder.
That folder is a hidden folder by windows explorer.
Open any folder - choose View, there is an option for - Hidden Items - is what i see - tick that and you will find the ProgramData folder, take care with those files, generally used to run your programs so any changes may get you into more trouble, its just that 66GB size that unusual.
And you did not create this mess, the 14.0 and 15.0 are leftovers from a previous installation, you should be able to simply delete those folders, if you are unsure just move them and if they contain any project files the program will complain by giving you a re-link request

Re: How to Use Pro X8 on Computer With Small C Drive
Hooray! I edited my preferences for both the Working Folder and the Audio Folder to the D drive. I opened the current project I am working on. I was able to drag a Transition down to the Video Track! I am now reloading the project pictures and video in Pro X8.
So that dang ProgramData folder is hidden! No wonder it is so large. I will find it after lunch and study what the heck is in there. As I mentioned earlier, I am scared to remove stuff when I don't know what it is!
I did leave the Pro X8 program on the C drive since all my other programs are there. The D Drive does contain under the folder Corel VideoStudio Pro, those "working folders" such as the 001_HD-Project...folders, 5panels folder, the 14.0, 15.0, 18.0 folders, etc. So I think I am finally on my way to editing! I also remembered to enable Smart Proxy. My one concern I have is I have a second Corel VideoStudio Pro folder, dated July 9th under the current Corel VideoStudio Pro, dated 9/25 (on the D Drive). That July 9th folder contains the folders 13.0, DFSmartProxy, and My Projects. It has 130 MB but I will deal with it later since some of the file dates are from 2010 and 2011 and the DFSmartProxy folder is empty. I still plan to move the 14.0 and 15.0 folders to my private cloud drive on my desk.
Wish me luck. Thank you everyone for your help.
I suppose you guys recommend after I complete my current project that I upgrade to the newest version of VideoStudio?

Only if you require the current features of VS, VSX8 is very stable, so if it does what you need, stick with it

Re: How to Use Pro X8 on Computer With Small C Drive
I ran TreeSize again. I opened the ProgramData folder with 62 GB, and found that Dell (my 5 month old computer) takes up 20.6 GB and Garmin takes up 36.1 GB! That is 56.7 GB of that whopping 62 GB. The Garmin is my car navigation device which I plug into the computer to update via on-line. I just looked at the list of programs in the Control Panel and the Garmin Express program is only 476 MB. Garmin Express logs you in online to update the maps and the program in the Garmin Navigation device, which I use only in the car. So now I have another rabbit hole to go down! I will contact both Garmin and Dell to find out why those files are so large. I don't know why the Garmin folder is so large unless it also stores all the U.S. map data on the desktop computer too. Why would it do that? Anyway, I found the GB's that I did not know were taking up my C drive storage. I guess Dell needs all those GB's to function. Wish me luck getting this straightened out!
I just saw your comment RobertOZ. I am beginning to think VSX8 is more stable than me! Thanks for that input.

My Dell Folder is 31.8GB, but my Garmin Folder is only 1.1 GB and the GPS unit has permanent free updates, so not sure what happens to previous downloaded maps.

Why the hell dell store anything in ProgramData? it should have a hidden partition.
I guess what you have is bloatware allover.
** This is why I hate branded laptops.
This is my W10 C in a 60G partition
Yours could be the same.

Re: How to Use Pro X8 on Computer With Small C Drive
Hi Jan
Its good that you have found the extra Gb, Like Asik/Robert I do not know why the Garmin files were installed to the Program Data folder
I would imaging that all updates to your maps are saved here, all older maps could be deleted I would think.
You could run the Garmin program to see if there is an option to delete remove older maps etc.
Corel X8 program
I am a little confused with the locations of some of your files as it appears your Documents folder structures have been moved to the D Drive, which would certainly reduce the size of the C Drive, not wrong at all but would influence where your default working folders are saved, this would also include the Smart Proxy folder which can use a lot of GB.
Can you go to X8 Settings – Preferences ( F6) – performance tab General and tell us where the working folders are located, also Performance Tab for the Proxy Folder.
When you downloaded the X8 files there would have been 3 files
VideoStudioUltimateX8_64bit_1Main.exe at 1.4Gb
VideoStudioX8_2Contents.exe at 860Mb
VideoStudioUltimateX8_64bit_3Bonus.exe at 1.6Gb
These should have been saved to the D Drive
Once installed another Setup folder is created here
C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Ultimate X8 Setup Files 1.8Gb
These 4 folders amount to 5.6Gb ish.
However as you have found the Garmen files to be the culprit I guess the setup folder could stay.
The X8 downloads are a different matter and you should save them to a safe location on the D Drive, you will need those to re-install the program, should you need to do that in the future.
The download link will not be active forever.
As well as saving the X8 downloads to a folder on the D Drive I would also create a Note Pad txt file to save your registration details serial number etc, save to same X8 downloads folder
And indeed any other additional plugins, templates, samples should be saved here.
Now you have a X8 installation package.
Ok X8 did have several service packs to fix problems, the program also was updated to a X8.5 version
Can you go to Help – About, what is the version number of your program.
Last thing just to explain the name of the program Corel uses roman numerals, well X for 10
So X8 is 10+ 8 = 18.0
X9 is 19.0 and X10 20.0
Corel then change the naming to take on the year of release the next version being 2018, then 2019 and the latest 2020. Help – About will show the version number.
Where you see the 15.0 folder, that is X5 program and I suspect is now uninstalled, the 15.0 folder being leftovers and can be purged from your system.

Re: How to Use Pro X8 on Computer With Small C Drive
Wow! I got more replies. Maybe everybody is sheltered in place.
1. I am glad to see RobertOZ has a Garmin navigation device and is familiar with it. I am looking at all those files right now. This is roughly our 3rd Garmin, and I see "applications" dates going back to 2015, duplicate applications, as well as many application extensions. I am waiting for a Garmin reply before I get too crazy deleting the old stuff. Also, Garmin Express was provided to Garmin users to update maps and the program, but I was thinking that was only on the navigation tool via the USB, not my computer. I had a micro SD card for Australia when we went there in 2015, but I was pretty sure I only loaded it on the navigation tool back then.
2. I understand that I am to keep the Pro X8 setup files in a safe place on the computer (C drive) in case I need to reload it. I plan to keep the program on C for now.
3. When I redownloaded Pro X8, Windows used that dang "One Drive" in Pro X8 Preferences. So I got rid of that. Here is how I have my Preferences set now:
Working Folder: D:\Users\Owner\Documents\Corel VideoStudio Pro\18.0\
Audio Working Folder: D:\Users\Owner\Documents\Corel VideoStudio Pro\18.0\VoiceOver\
Smart Proxy Folder: D:\Users\Owner\Documents\Corel VideoStudio Pro\18.0\
4. I am so glad that I can add transitions to the Video Track and not have Pro X8 shut down. While sheltered in place for the next year(?) I plan to focus on video editing.
I replaced my 10 year old Gateway and used PC Mover. I needed a PC Cleaner and Mover! Have to run off and look into something out front. More later.

Re: How to Use Pro X8 on Computer With Small C Drive
C Drive space update: With assistance from Garmin, I deleted the 36 GB Garmin data from the Programdata folder (simple delete procedure using the Windows key and delete, I think). RobertOZ's Garmin file size is 1.1 GB. Hmm. I also have the free map updates. I did a Garmin program/map update using Garmin Express (which I uninstalled and then reinstalled first). Garmin space used in the Programdata folder is now 6.58 GB. I now have 29.4% free space on the C drive. I am going to study the Garmin FAQ's online for explanations of how this file system works, since I thought downloaded stuff went straight into the navigation device via the USB port.
Been busy following the news here, and running food & supply errands to stock up for the big Coronavirus season. I plan to focus on creating the current movie in the next few days and see if I run into any other problems. I have my fingers crossed. I also will clean up more of that dang C drive. Stay safe everyone.

Re: How to Use Pro X8 on Computer With Small C Drive
Jan, I have just updated my Garmin nuvi 1390,( years old now but still working) total size of update, 445mb, so how could you possibly have 6.58 Gb from one download, that would have taken hours to download (my 445mb is an estimated one hour download, so Garmin servers must be very slow)
The maps are located in ProgramData\garmin\coreservice\downloads\map, once you are certain that any new maps have been successfully installed in your GPS, you can delete any previous maps, you only need to keep the current maps
Edit
Actual download took 15 mins
Deleted all the old maps, Garmin file is now 547mb
