How to resize only a selected rectangle?

Post by pstein »

I load a picture into PSP X2 and select a rectangle part of it.

Now I want to resize (=shrink) this selected area by 50%

So I click on menu

Image-->Resize

and adjust the settings as follows:

Width=50 percent
Height=50 percent
Advanced settings=YES
Lock Aspect Ratio=YES
Resize all Layer=NO !!!!!

When I click now on the OK button the whole picture is resized instead of only the selected area.

Why?

Do I have to convert the selection to extra layer?
How?

Thank you
Peter

Have you turned your background layer into a raster layer?

Hi Peter,

Yes, you should promote it to a new layer 1st, either via the menu Selections->Promote Selection To Layer, or by hitting Ctrl+Shift+P on your keyboard or by right-clicking on the image layer in the layers-palette and selecting: Promote Selection To Layer

PS. ... or by switching to the Pick tool and then clcking inside the selection (there are more ways too :lol:).

Hi Peter,
after you have converted the selection to a layer as explained by migf1, in the Resize settings window, uncheck Resize all layers. This will resize only the active layer.

Ok, thank you.

Promoting the selection as additional layer has a disadvantage:

The selection is DUPLICATED.

In other words: after duplication and shrinking the original selected area is still alive.

So the promoting layer feature has no no benefit of the "traditional tedious workaround":

1. Cut the selection
2. Paste as new image
3. Shrink/resize
4. Copy new, shrinked picture into clipboard
5. Insert in the original picture

Is there no promote selection as new layer WITH deleting/cutting old area?

I am not sure what you are trying to do Peter.

To cut instead of duplicating the selected area, you can drag the selection with the selection mode set to Replace

This of course leaves a hole behind the original area, and a floating layer in the layers-palette (which you have to decide what you want to do with it).

Btw, you can get the same results with Ctrl+X for cutting, and then Ctrl+E and clicking anywhere in the picture, for getting the selection as a floating layer (or just Ctrl+L, for getting the cut selection as new regular layer).

In all these cases, you will have a hole behind the original area. Later versions of PSP provide a Magic Fill feature. Depending on the picture and the selection, it can help in filling up that area (at least for not starting from scratch).

This is exactly what I need.
Even better....After moving the selection I need no more "promote Layer" action

Thank you
