Paintshop Pro 2018 - any way to remove one color from a pic?

Post by Wraith_3 »

I've got an old family photo that I scanned and at one point my sister drew a smiley face on it when she was younger with marker. It's a purple color. Is there some way to select that color and remove it from the image? It looks different than all the other color in the image so I wouldn't think it would alter anything else, but I'm not expert so not sure.

As Joe implied, depending on the content it could be an easy or a cumbersome process.

In general, the magic fill and the clone tool can be used for such tasks (there are other tools too, like the object remover, blemish fix, etc, but it would be best if you could share the picture, or just the part in question, so we know what we are dealing with).

If the photo is black and white, you need to scan it in color mode.
Apply Image / Split channel / Split to RGV or Split to CMYK.
Observe the resulting images and retain the one which is the better (with the defect less visible).

If the image is in color...

Create an empty raster layer named Skin color on top in the Layers Palette.
With the Dropper Tool, select a similar skin color on the face.
Use the Paint Brush Tool and paint under Blend Mode Color on the Skin layer above the marker color.
Set the Skin layer to Color Mode.

I don't think there is a quick way to fix that. I would go with Magic Fill and Clone, like so: https://imgur.com/TmNLsny

My suggestion was not possible on your image.
The solution is to work with the Clone Tool (see migf1 video):

The complete correction was made with only the Clone Tool:

Thanks! I have some experience using the clone tool so I'll give that a try. I'm a VERY VERY VERY amateur with photo editing.

For such retouching work, yes, it needs some experience. The secret is: "Practice! Practice! Practice!" :-)

If the extracted image you posted is not resized, you may paste the corrected image inside your original image.

To correct part of the overall magenta cast, use
Adjust / Color / Fade correction

Thanks! Yeah I just scanned that so I haven't played around with any of the color correction or anything.

I was playing around with the clone tool and when you get to a hard edge, like the oven vent in the picture, how do you keep a hard edge when using the tool?

You can bound an area by selecting it first, then use the clone tool inside it (you can also feather the selection, if its limits are too hard). The tool won't affect anything outside the selection.

I demo'ed it in the video of my previous post: https://forum.corel.com/viewtopic.php?p=380745#p380745 (the part of the video between 2:30 and 2:10, where I was working on the top of the picture, in order to keep a hard edge at the top of the bricked area ... note that imgur counts playback time backwards).
