edit question psp 2020 pro

Post by mikesteven »

I have a jpg file of a dvd which is round. There is a white square around the circle. I am trying to remove the square and just have the round image as a jpg file. What are the steps to do this? I am having trouble getting this done.
Thank you,

Mike

It would have helped if you could have posted an image of that particular jpg, because how to best isolate the DVD from the background depends on what the background and what the DVD consist of.

If the background is one solid color (and you said it is white) and at least the edge around the circumference of the DVD is a different color (i.e., no white) then the easy way is to first make sure that the image has been promoted to a raster layer from a Background layer (unless it already shows in the Layers palette as Raster). Then use the Magic Want, Match Mode RGB, make sure the Contiguous box is checked, then click on the background. If the background completely surrounds the DVD then this should make a selection covering all of the background. If the edge of the DVD touches the edge of the image anywhere then if only part of the background is selected make sure that Mode (to the left of Match Mode on the Tool Options bar) is set to Add and click on part of the background that's not selected. Continue doing so until all the background is selected, then hit the Delete button. This will make the area around the DVD transparent.

You cannot. JPG doesn't support transparency. You will always have the white.
If you want the white removed and stay transparent, follow JoeB's advice and save the file as PNG with transparency.

Do you want to print it, or to place on a website, or to do something particular?

I want to print it on a printable disk. So I need to save the image as a round image so I can import it into the Canon software. The Canon software usually picks up the image but it wants to print it as a 8 1/2x 11 paper instead of a dvd disk.

First, follow the advice that I gave you to remove the white background. Make sure that your image is resized to 4.7 inches square with at least 200PPI set as the Print Resolution. Then save as transparent PNG image by going to Save As, select PNG (Portable Network Graphics) as the Save As Type, click the Options button on that same dialogue box and in the Save Options dialogue that opens click the Run Optimizer button. In the Optimizer dialogue click the Transparency tab. Make sure that the Alpha Channel Transparency radio button and Existing Image or Layer Transparency radio button are selected. Then click OK then Save, saving it into your preferred folder with your preferred name. [NOTE: Any time you want to save a PNG with transparency in PSP you have to go through that routine. I haven't found a way to keep the Transparency as default.]

To print with Canon on a printable disc you need Canon's free My Image Garden software as well as a Canon printer that can also print to printable disc. Open My Image Garden. From the Guide Menu click the Disc Label icon. The Set Design and Paper dialogue will open. Click the Simple 2 disc icon to select it. Click the small white arrow beside Paper Size (below those disc icons) and select Standard Disc 4.7" Small Inner Circle then click OK. In the dialogue that opens click the Add Image icon at the bottom and browse to your PNG, select it and click Open. It will appear as a thumbnail in the black area above the disc image that shows in the main window. Drag and Drop that thumbnail onto the main part of the DVD outline and your image will cover the disc. Click Print then follow the instructions that appear on your screen. Assuming you have a Canon disc capable printer it should recognize that you will be printing from the disc tray. The dialogue with instructions will tell you to wait until instructed while the printer prepares for the disc then tell you to insert the disc into the disc printer tray of your printer. Make sure you know how to properly access that tray and properly insert the disc. It varies slightly depending on the Canon disc printer you have but they are relatively standard. There are only about 5 such disc printers. The MX922 (maybe 20) would be the cheapest but likely not available anymore.

If you have a Canon disc capable printer the manual will tell you how to print to disc. It may not list the Canon My Image Garden software if there is other similar, maybe newer disc printing software Canon uses but I find My Image Garden works very well.

JoeB

Round images don't exist under Windows. Images are always square or rectangular.

Don't worry about the white you see around your image. The white color will not be printed. White ink doesn't exist on your printer. The white you see on a printed image is the white of the paper.
