File size of rendered videos

Post by philwynk »

Hi, all,

I'm pretty new to making films, and pretty new to Corel VideoStudio.

I've now made my second video, intended to be posted on YouTube in a channel that I have not established yet. I'm aiming for fairly simple videos no more than 10 minutes long, and I'm rendering them into .mp4 format. The first video rendered to about 700 mbytes in size, the second to just over 1 gbyte. These file sizes seem both too large for the venue and unnecessary.

If my goal is a YouTube video, how large should a 10-minute video be? (Obviously it will vary, but what's a rule of thumb?) What settings should I be using to produce my YouTube-bound videos, such that the resulting videos are a manageable size? Should I choose a different output format? What affects my output file size?

Thanks in advance for any tips or suggestions.

The size of a video depends on a host of factors including video resolution, e.g. 2160p vs. 240p, and video bitrate, e.g. 64Mbps vs. 1Mbps. However, you don't say what the properties are of your video.

You should render your video in a format that YouTube recommends or you may see weird affects when playing back your video on YouTube. Some of the recommendations for videos uploaded to YouTube include:

Supported YouTube file formats (https://support.google.com/youtube/trou ... 8402?hl=en)
Recommended upload encoding settings (https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/1722171)

Video Studio has a YouTube upload option via Share – Web, not everyone likes using this but a good profile comparison, although I was unable to log-in using X10
You can either select a file to upload or allow the option to convert the project, as a guide for HD video it uses Mpeg-4 1920 x 1080 x 25/30fps at 8Mbps.
A 10 minute file using 550Mb

Of course there are other profiles to choose from
