I have my own tale to tell about H.265. Last year I bought a new Intel NUC with Core-i7. Intel said it could play H.265 when I installed the extension. After that H.265 would play on VLC Player and could be edited in Cyberlink Power Director and other NLE's I own... except for Video Studio which, like you, always showed just black. Corel tried telling me my computer was not up to the job despite my having proof that other programs had no difficulty with it. I even went through a couple of remote sessions with Corel, with no success. One of those remote sessions appeared to screw up something else in Win 10. So in the end I had to reinstall Win 10 from the ground up. I installed the MS extension as part of that. And when I reinstalled VS, surprise surprise -- it had no more difficulty with H.265. That was a few months ago, and I am not suggesting you need to reinstall Win 10, which is a somewhat drastic remedy. But I never otherwise found out why H.265 would not earlier play in just VS...
Hi Ken,
Thank you so much for your tale.
I'll continue work on this issue after my trip (to Iceland) without taking H.265 videos.
Best,
Yang

Well have a good trip... though I would probably continue taking video with H.265. You would probably find that if you bought another NLE that it would probably deal with it. Mind you, if indeed the MS extension is not being installed for some very mysterious reason, you could still have trouble with other NLEs... I suppose my problem was that VS simply wouldn't accept H.265 despite my having the MS extension...

Hi
If you view your Apps & Features list it should show HEVC Video Extensions………
Start – Settings cogwheel – Apps—displays the Apps & Features

Search this list option at the top for HEVC

If HEVC is installed it will be listed there.

That's where an image backup saves the day.

Hi Yvesart
and welcome to the forums

If the last Windows Update is the culprit -- have you tried uninstalling the update
From Program and Features, from the list on the left choose “View installed Updates” , You should now be able to select the last update and uninstall.

Does that fix the problem.
