Thank you Levi, I just replied to your PM!
Btw I don't know in what degree the pick tool is affected by the deformation matrix, but at some point it started slightly changing the aspect ratio dimensions when in Scale mode (in my experience it does it more often than not, but I don't remember from which version of PSP it started doing that).
Anyway, for anyone else interested, the above mentioned PSP File Format Specification 7 PDF is still online:

Re: pspimage files suddenly not valid
Oh no, this particular issue has nothing to do with the pick tool at all. The deformation matrix is something that only really exists on text objects. So if you scale, shear, translate, rotate, etc. [[1,0,0],[0,1,0],[0,0,1]] is what['s called an identity matrix. It means there are no transformations apply to it at all. The two values that were changed are the translation values, meaning they moved to the right by 99.5 and down 58.5. Which is close to their starting point of 100x59.
The reason this is so odd is that Jaydan create two different versions of the same file. The one that's considered an invalid file shows the translation points in the matrix. While the correct file shows the proper identity matrix.
EDIT: Now that I've corrected for format version X8-2020 having an additional unknown Byte expansion field the Text Element count is showing a much more reasonable number, but it's showing 6 elements while the working file format is showing 5 elements. So that's another small difference between them. Honestly, these small differences just keep adding up. They so far all seem valid, they're just interesting.

Re: pspimage files suddenly not valid
With PSPX9 it appears that if you save a file with text it'll do this. That is not fixed. If you have an image with TExt save it as an older version of PSPImage such as X8 and it'll save and open just fine.
For images that already report as corrupted there might be something I can do. I haven't finished my project but I can get a lot of information out of a file if you don't want to recreate them manually.
If the images that are reporting as problematic don't have text objects in them then it might be a different problem altogether with the same symptom and I'd have to see the file to investigate.

Re: pspimage files suddenly not valid
One extra check you could do is install XnView MP and see if that opens the file. As Paintshop pro x9 is old I would suggest trying is paintshop pro 2021 which is better. Reason file get corrupt is usually how they are saved, at the time, media used. I used to get loads of files corrupt but realised that the media I was using in my case CDs were damaged.
If you can open them in XnView MP then you could save them to another format.

Re: pspimage files suddenly not valid
Just checked all images with Xnview MP and all images from both zip files open. The first is a guitar line drawing but is mostly skin colour with an odd white patch to the picture/ canvas to the right of it as you look directly at the image.. I have checked all images in the properties of Xnview MP and I have posted them below. What I suspect is that the version of Paintshop pro you are using is outdated and not able to read the image properly I would suggest resetting Paintshop pro Usually file reset on the menu to make sure its not a registry entry error causing this problem. Your saying your using PSPX9 well thats old
you could try patching it to the latest version https://www.paintshoppro.com/en/support/updates/#psp-X9
One thing to note if you ever used the image in a newer version of Paintshop pro and saved it then it might not be backward compatible with all versions of Paintshop pro formats. Now another thing if you have installed trial versions of newer products along side Paintshop pro that again can cause problems.
If you are going to fully uninstall any software I recommend using Revo Uninstaller pro as it will help you get rid of all thoses pesky registry entries, that can stop things working.

Re: pspimage files suddenly not valid
As PSPImage files are often more than a single layer does XnViewMP actually manage to save the entire image or are they just looking at the composite image that PSP adds to the beginning of the file for the sake of creating thumbnails?

Re: pspimage files suddenly not valid
the zip file with only 2 in them only the 8 work with psp2021.
Your other zip with 1 file does not open as I feared it has a write issue meaning it could be a defective hard drive or it is locked to a location, same with file 9 (from the zip with 2 images)
