4K content editing issue

Post by okyou »

Hello,
I tried to a project to edit a few 4K video clips. I am using (cropped) only a small amount of clips from each 4K file. However, I have to wait a min or 2 even to move the timeline either way and the entire editing process becoming frustrating . Is there any way to make the editing more tolerable ? Attached is my project properties for your reference. One thing I noticed is that before inputting these 4K clips the editing was normal.

Thanks for you help

You don't really tell us anything about your computer. But are you using SmartProxy with the 4K clips? If not, I suggest you do -- and be patient while the proxy files are created. Then you will have lower quality/SD clips which can be edited and play more quickly. And when you are satisfied, the edits are then applied to the 4K originals.

Hello Ken,

Thanks for your information. Currently my PC spce is as follow

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CPvJou4zhA

I currently do not have a graphic card installed. Do you think if I add a graphic card like GTX 1050 would increase the display speed ? Do you know any recommended hardware spec (CPU RAM NAND Graphic card , etc) would optimized the preference of VS ?
Thanks for your help

As previously asked: Are you using SmartProxy with the 4K clips?

Unlikely that the issue is the refresh rate.

You're running an Intel Core i5-3570K which is marginally powered so you must expected some lag. However, you must use SmartProxy to have the best 4K editing experience with your hardware.

Hello Ken,

Thanks for your useful information. I have already set the proxy spec to
pic1.jpg
Do I need to adjust any of these values ? Would the proxy folder location and space matters ? Would I7-10700 able to handle VS smoothly. There are a lot of reviews on CPU for games but very few for video editing. What would you recommendation ?

Thanks for your help

Those proxy properties look fine. But I'm not sure you should change the folder where they are created. Once the editing is done VS has to know where to find the proxies to be able to apply the edits to the 4K originals, and I suspect it would be looking at the folder specified in Documents... I don't know of any command to tell the program where else it should be looking...

I am going to upgrade to see it would improve. Another questions, even though VS never specified how many RAM it will use , does that mean VS will used whatever ram in the system beyond the min 16 mg ? What I am trying to do is to value whether it is better to have better CPU ( Intel I7-10700k ) or more RAM (64 MB) when I cannot have the best of both world.
Thanks for your opinion .

VS will work perfectly fine with 8Gb ram. Moving to 16Gb ram will not do much, if anything. (The standard these days is moving to 16Gb anyway). Absolutely no requirement for 32/64Gb.

P.s. You'd be perfectly fine with a 10th gen i5.

I am running 64GB, because I can, and cannot see any difference to the days when I ran 16GB

Agreed. 16GB is about all you will need for most applications. But there are those programs that "want" more..... those are the "pro" editors. Especially if you have large projects and many tracks and fx.
