Is the Corel Videostudio product made to be backwards compatible.
I am finding that opening a project file from VSX10 Ult using VS2018 Ult loads well, looks good for several minutes of editing, but then results in some peculiar effects on my PC. The screen mode can change and 'insufficient memory' errors are prevalent. I expected to open the project and save it again in the new format for VS2018 and continue editing.
I have a few projects that I currently want to update (VSX10, VS9, VS8) that are just over an hour in so its a daunting task to start again in the newer version of VS2018 Ultimate.
Are these Videostudio programs not backward compatible ?
I don't have any issues with VS2018 Ult making movies from scratch, editing, sharing M2T files and then Blu Ray burning.
I have deleted my VSX10 Ult but could reinstall ... is this the only fix ?
Any help appreciated.
Cheers
Alex.

Re: Videostudio backwards compatability
Hi
All versions with the exception of 2020 are supposed to be Backward compatible, we can use “Save As” to give the project a new name, I usually add say X10 to the name
From the “Save As” window “Save as Type” can be changed / selected for an earlier version.
X10 for instance can be saved for X9 and X8
We have to remember that newer versions may have been updated using editing techniques that the older versions did not support.
As for CVS2020 that program cannot use Backward compatibility, if you are intending to open an earlier vsp version, I would create a copy before opening in 2020, that will retain the original versions VSP. Corel have given no explanation as to why they changed this, but if they are getting complaints then maybe the easiest option is to disallow this feature.
What you are looking at is forward compatibility, opening a X10 in 2018.
I have to say that I have had problems opening X10 in later versions, so much that I have reverted to using X10.
I still have a couple of long projects that I just don’t seem to be able to finish.
And like you they seem to work better being created as new.
As a work-round I did try importing say X10 vsp to the library of 2018
Then using 2018 I started a new project and set the properties to match the video types.
Dragging the vsp to the timelines adds all clips to a new vsp, that seemed to improve things, editing wise.
So yes re-installing X10 may be the way to go especially if you have used the programs samples or Instant Projects, you may need the X10 files

Re: Videostudio backwards compatability
It depends. There may be some compatibility issues with certain features/filters that were applied to an older VSP (see https://forum.corel.com/viewtopic.php?f ... y&start=15).wiselx wrote:Is the Corel Videostudio product made to be backwards compatible. ... Never seen this behaviour.wiselx wrote:The screen mode can change and 'insufficient memory' errors are prevalent.
It may well be, and it's why that I keep older versions of VS installed to guarantee that VSPs created by an older version of VS can be edited without fuss. However, in your case as you can open the older VSP, then you should try to immediately save it as a VS2018 VSP and then reopen it.wiselx wrote:I have deleted my VSX10 Ult but could reinstall ... is this the only fix ?

Re: Videostudio backwards compatability
tletter advised that you should try to immediately save it as a VS2018 VSP and then reopen it. Just a minor but important point here. When saving it as a VS 2018 VSP give it a different name. That way the X10 VSP will still be preserved and will still be able to be opened in X10 unchanged.

Re: Videostudio backwards compatability
This sort of issue has been reported often in the forum. And a good workpractice to avoid it is to finish a project file with the same VS version that you started it with.
The lure of particular features in newer versions - eg, split sceens in 2018 vs X10 - may be hard to resist, but this is one consequence of mixing VS versions in editing the same vsp. If you must, follow Ken's advice and make a copy before using the newer version.

Re: Videostudio backwards compatability
The OP's issue was stated as "I have a few projects that I currently want to update (VSX10, VS9, VS8)". So the question is if you've upgraded to a new version of VS, e.g. VS2018, can this version seamlessly edit older VSPs? Experience says the answer is that there is no guarantee, hence you're best to keep older versions of VS installed if you want to avoid certain compatibility issues whilst editing older VSPs.Davidk wrote:And a good workpractice to avoid it is to finish a project file with the same VS version that you started it with.

Re: Videostudio backwards compatability
Thanks to all for the constructive feedback you provided on my question.
Like a lot of users I have in the past had several versions of Corel Videostudio starting from Ulead12 through to VSX10 these did coexist quite happily but I have been lured to introduce newer features and decided to concentrate just on one program - this was to be VS2018 Ultimate, so all others have been deleted. I do of course still have the installation media for most of the old versions, however my main projects were all principally done using VSX10 Ultimate and it is a few of these that I wish to update and add new content and features.
If I reinstall VSX10 Ultimate does this mean that I also have to clean up and reinstall VS2018 Ultimate as well due to the interaction of these later versions so the latest install has preference with any updates ?
cheers
Alex.

Re: Videostudio backwards compatability
I'd suggest installing VS in the order of release, i.e. uninstall VS2018, install X10, and then reinstall VS2018.wiselx wrote:If I reinstall VSX10 Ultimate does this mean that I also have to clean up and reinstall VS2018 Ultimate
Once you install X10 and get the last available updates that'll be it for updates to X10. The same goes for VS2018 as it's extremely rare that Corel issues releases for versions that are 2 and 3 generations behind the latest available version of VS.wiselx wrote:as well due to the interaction of these later versions so the latest install has preference with any updates ?

Re: Videostudio backwards compatability
Uninstalling an older version when there are newer ones on the PC is generally not an issue. However, if you install an older version when a newer one exists, the older install may change or replace some files the newer one needs for older versions. So the recommendation always is: install older first, and proceed with additional installs by oldest precedence.
Which is what tletter suggested.
