Pan and Zoom - Stay within source boundary
Greetings. I am making a demonstration video for a software application. The video capture was done at 1920 X 1080 and that is also the video frame size of my project. I need to zoom in (in less than one second) to the upper left or upper right sides of the video frame to clearly show what is being clicked or typed in the software. I've used other video editors so I have some familiarity with key frames, pan and zoom. I have created key frames for Pan and Zoom. I am using the Animated Edit Mode. The "Stay within source boundary" box is checked (in fact I cannot un-check it). My first key frame is full frame 100% Zoom Ratio. My second key frame is at 359 V and 356 H with a 140 Zoom Ratio (zoomed into upper left part of frame. This comes close to getting the desired effect. The problem is, as the pan is occurring, the zoom is too slow, relative to the pan, to avoid going off the left side of the frame. Thus black appears on the left and top edges. This confused me because the "Stay within source boundary" box is checked. I can add more key frames to slow down the pan but there are so many movements in the video I would really like to avoid having to spend the time to set all of that. Is there something I can do to avoid the zoom outpacing the pan and having frame go off the edges? Thank you.

Hi Zappy0
and welcome to the forums
You do not say which version of Video Studio you are using unless I have missed that somewhere, Pan and Zoom functions has changed from older versions.
Can you update your profile to show the actual VS version
Your profile also shows using Windows XP is that also correct?

Re: Pan and Zoom - Stay within source boundary
Thanks for the fast reply. I am using VideoStudio Pro 2020 (23.1.0.481). I am using Windows 10. I recently purchased VideoStudio Pro 2020 so I'm not familiar with previous versions. I have made an earnest attempt to find a solution in the online help.

Hi Zappy0
Thanks for updating the profile
You should either switch the Edit Mode to On the Fly, that should keep the frame within view
Or
Using the Position options, the 9 little anchor squares to position to the corner
Those should stop the black border.
As for syncing the pan and zoom that is the keyframe settings
You should only need one extra keyframe at one second 140 zoom, right click that keyframe for copy and paste all to right
The first keyframe set to 100%
If you create a sample VSP using an Image not a video to pan and zoom.
Zip the vsp, attach to your post and we can have a look at your settings

Re: Pan and Zoom - Stay within source boundary
I switched some of my Pan and Zoom over to On The Fly and it appears this will work (thank you!). However, it seems I cannot just open the Pan & Zoom dialog box and change Edit Mode from Animated to On The Fly. I need to delete all my key frames and then rebuild them while the Edit Mode is On The Fly. That is fine, although that is why I was confused. However, before I rebuild the effect on all of my clips, I must ask, is there a way to simply convert my existing Animated key frames to On The Fly?

Re: Pan and Zoom - Stay within source boundary
Hi
You seem to indicate that the pan and zoom started as full screen to end up in a top corner that would require one extra keyframe with little work to reposition
If you used the 9 anchor points, pressing the top left/right should set the frame into the corner without those black borders.
You would need to change for 2nd and last keyframe, assuming you only have the three keyframes.
If you have more than 3 keyframes then i cannot imagine what effect you are trying to set, as i said earlier you could attach a VSP with P & Z applied to an image.
There is an option to copy the effect to all clips but each clip should be the same duration
First set the P&Z for clip 1, then right click the clip on the timeline for Copy Attributes, Shift + Click to select all clips
Right click for Copy Attributes.
If the durations are different the keyframe will reflect that, say clip 1 is 10 seconds with a keyframe at 1 second
Copy and paste to a clip at 20 seconds will set the keyframe at 2 seconds

Re: Pan and Zoom - Stay within source boundary
Thanks Trevor. I had made a mess so I just deleted my key frames and carefully recreated them while making sure the Edit Mode was On the Fly. At first, it seemed like my changes were not taking effect and even the preview showed the box leaving the frame. I finally closed the application, restarted it and everything started working. If that happens again I'll take some notes to see if I can recreate the issue. I was able to deploy the video last night with all of its pans and zooms. Thanks for explaining this to me, your patience, and your quick replies.
