What format to use

Post by Shirley »

I recently purchased Movie Studio3 and have made a few cds. When I created them in the DVD format they would not play on my sony DVD player. When I created them in the VCD and SVCD format they did play on my DVD player but they will not play on other DVD players that I have tried. I wanted to give a CD that I created to my children and it would not play on any of their DVD players in either VCD or SVCD format. Is there a universal format to use so that it will play on all DVD players? Is there a special way of creating the CD to be able to play it on all DVD players? Thanks for your help

Hello

Check these items!!

First of all What type of DVD do you burn into-?? if you use DVD- (minus) discs it probably works on most DVDplayers- if you use DVD+(plus) discs maybe only newer DVDplayers can play it.

Next item -Have you selected the right TVsetup in your preferences?? setup PAL ( eg Europe) or the MickeyMousesystem (sorry..:-)) NTCS used eg in the US What system do you use where you live-check up the settings in preferences!!

Both things are crucial if it should be playable-on a DVDplayer- some of them can take all TVsystems and all DVDtypes though.

Besides that I cannot see any problems for you!!

Good Luck!!

Hello Bengt,

I appreciate your quick response. I am very new to all of this but I will try to answer your questions.

First of all the CDs that I am using are MAXELL CD-RW (80 min 700mb). I could not find anything about whether they are + or - DVD discs.

Secondly this is the way my preferences are set:

I have the following items checked: VCD Player compliant; anti flicker filter; Always show relink message; Max 30mb menus for set-top DVD+VF recorder. I also have the following settings: Resample Quality - best; TV System - NTSC (I am in the US). I believe these are the default settings since I am not real knowledgeable about these things.

My DVD player is a Sony which was purchased in August. The other DVD players that we tried to play it on were all (3 of them) Christmas gifts so they are problably newer than mine.

I would appreciate any help or suggestions you can give since I am a real novice in making these CDs. By the way, in case it is pertinent, these are slide shows of still pictures, with background music.

Hi again Shirley!

You are using a -(minus) DVD disc its OK and also your preference settings look alright!

If you have burnt the DVD directly it might be the burningsoftware causing the trouble?? - have you updated to the latest burnerdriver ??
Even if Moviemaker bought recently you have to update it!

http://www.ulead.com/tech/general/burning_engine.htm

I got that link 2 days ago from Uleads support but didnot use it myself as I first of all make an imagefile to the harddisk - then I burn it into a DVD.

I prefer the burningsoftware Nero when burning DVDs as its the best and most powerful available disc burning software on the market acc to my experience.
If you have Nero disc burningsoftware installed I would suggest that you instead of burning the DVD directly set the output to a disc-image file.

Uncheck "record to disc " and fold up the menu with double-arrows to the right and check the diskimagefile and select folder to put it in!

When the image is finished you can create the DVD from the imagefile created by Moviemaker3-
If you have another burnersoftware in your computer than Nero it might also burn a DVD from an imagefile- check that.

Good Luck

Check http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers to know if your DVD players will support to play the disc you burned.

Hope this helps.

Hi Shirley,
Sorry to interfere, but I read in a previous post that you are using CDs, not DVDs. The only formats available to you then are VCD and SVCD. Both do not play standard on stand alone DVD players. If you want that, use DVDs (- or + depending on your burner). Both play well nowadays on most stand alone players.

Shirley,

You should NOT be using cd-rw disks.
Many dvd players are not compatible with cd-rw.

Try creating the VCD's you have made on Maxell
HP, or Sony CD-R cd's. Any brand name media
except for memorex.

Besides a dvd player having to be able to playback a
VCD disk it must also be compatible with the type of
media. Media meaning CD-RW or CD-R.
The same is true for Dvd media and formats.
