Smartrender? virtually impossible to edit 4k footage VS18
Always have a complaint. 4K footage, i brought onto timeline a few seconds of edited clips. So jerky..scenes missing..making it near impossible to put any filters on - and im only 8 seconds in!!! -
4K the problem?
My pc has enough Ram 32gb ..graphics card GX 970 and processor I7 6300 - aware not the best.
Past projects get the job done so to speak HD footage..but so far with this...finding it impossible really to being editing - very fustrating!
This smartrender..never got to grips with it..its enabled as i say..but...now what? ...hasnt made a difference..is it because a few edited clips already on timeline?
I noticed this time more then ever before...theres a slight ( but annoying ) delay whenever i now click on..well..anything eg, a filter effect or a bleach blur or any effect to move it across to the clip..slow reactions...it works on the clip but definately a slow reaction when clicking.
I clicked on the video clips in the media folder. I created smart render of all the clips. Brought down on timeline, it is still very choppy..impossible to really put a filter etc onto this the mouth goes words come after type thing..also, eg, the hair of people..quality is dreadful...i take it when render...all sorts itself out?
Thoughts welcome

Are you talking about SmartRender or SmartProxy? From what you say, I think you are talking about SmartProxy. At least, that is what you need to enable. It makes a standard definition copy ('proxy') of the 4K originals. These are then easy to edit, and should hasten both preview and the speed at which the filters work. You have to be patient, though, since it takes a while for each SmartProxy copy to be made, so go and have a cup of coffee while it is working. Then you do your editing, and when finished, when you render the edits are applied to the 4K originals...
SmartRender, on the other hand, only works and becomes useful once the editing has been finished and you are ready to... render! With SmartRender then enabled you will find that those parts of your project which have not been affected by the editing will render very fast. So overall the render should take less time.

VS2018 certainly can edit 4K videos if Smart Proxy is enabled and you ensure that all video clips have had a proxy file generated (check this using the Smart Proxy File Manager).garjobo123 wrote:virtually impossible to edit 4k footage VS18
In the edit mode, you are viewing a down-rezed proxy file so yes the quality is not 4K, rather it's probably HD. However, the rendered output should be high quality 4K, although at times VS renders some clips using the low-rez proxy file so beware of that.garjobo123 wrote:quality is dreadful...i take it when render...all sorts itself out?

Mind you, that is something which happens with VS 2019 and 2020, though I am pretty it did not happen with VS 2018 which garjobo123 is using.tletter wrote:...although at times VS renders some clips using the low-rez proxy file so beware of that.

I routinely use VS2018 and can assure you that at times VS2018 renders some clips using the low-rez proxy file. In fact, VS2018 sometimes gets so confused with its proxy files that it's best to delete them and recreate them.Ken Berry wrote:though I am pretty it did not happen with VS 2018 which garjobo123 is using.

Smart Proxy files created in the background so check the Smart Proxy Queue Manager to see what's happening (see image).garjobo123 wrote:I have highlighted the files and right clicked and Create smartproxy file... ..nothing really happens
Check your Settings for the Smart Proxy Manager (see image).garjobo123 wrote:Is there a 'sign' to or a place where the smartproxy file goes too?
Yes.garjobo123 wrote:but on a couple of these screenshots next to that appears another small square slightly whiter and looks a bit like a keyboard. I suspect that is the smartproxy icon?
Check as described above, if proxy files are being created and if not then highlight all clips and select 'Create Smart Proxy File'.garjobo123 wrote:Just curious..appears on 2 of the 51 screenshots...

Hi
Smart Proxy files are created when inserting a clip of suitable resolution to the timelines
For your clips already on the timeline you have to create the proxies by right click the clip and Create Smart Proxy files
You can view Settings - Smart Proxy Manager – Queue Manager to check progress or Smart Proxy File Manager to view proxy files
All clips in the library or on the timeline get a small double looking icon when proxies have been created as image

While the proxy files are creating smaller files for your 4k footage, the hdd activity maybe cause your system slowdown, usually i just let the proxy files finished.
