Screen capture software or utility?

Post by pvreditor »

My older versions of VideoStudio (x8 and x9) both came with a screen capture utility that I find myself using more and more. I also have VS 2019 Ultimate, but it did not seem to come with a screen capture utility. What I want to do is use the mouse to open things on the screen and capture that action in a good-quality video. The utility I have for x9 does a good job but seems to be limited to HD (1920 x 1080).

Here are my questions:

1. Does VS 2019 Ultimate come with a screen capture utility? If so, what do I need to do to get it loaded and functioning? And does it record at 4K?

2. If there is no longer a screen capture utility supplied by VideoStudio, can you suggest one that records 4K, is easy to use and cheap?

Thanks!

Hi:
I have Corel Video studio 2019 and 2020 ultimate versions and both come with a screen capture option. However, it doesn't work and crashes the program whenever and however it is opened. It have had to switch to a stand alone capture process.

Apparently the Multicam attachment which came with 2019 and 2020 is supposed to act among other things as a screen capture program. Most people seem to think it is rubbish. Personally, I use Ashampoo Snap, and while it does video, I don't think it can record in 4K. You might also want to look at this for suggestions of a number of programs which will screen capture 4K: https://filmora.wondershare.com/screen- ... order.html

Hopefully others will have suggestions.

The older version of VideoStudio's screen capture (for x8 and x9) is a standalone screen capture utility, and it works perfectly but is limited to 1080p as far as I can tell. Are you saying that with VS 2019 and 2020 that screen capture is done from within the actual editing program?

No. There was a multicam add-on which had a separate icon on my monitor. I can't tell you it's full name as I removed it. It was something like Multicam Lite... Yes, found it: Multicam Capture Lite see https://learn.corel.com/tutorials/video ... m-capture/

Thanks for all that info, Ken. I just found that Multicam Capture Lite on my computer... I hadn't even noticed it before. I opened the program and it did an analysis of my computer. It then set the capture resolution to 1920 x 1080, which was the highest resolution listed among the choices. So even if it did work, it's limited to 1080p and I'm looking for 4K.

If anyone else has experience with a screen capture program that you really like, please share.

I really like the way the x9 utility works. Too bad it's limited to HD.

Do a googlesearch for 4K screen capture software and you get lots of hits. Of course you also need a 4K monitor for 4K capture

I did some Googling and discovered that Nvidia has a screen capture utility that is part of the company's GeForce Experience package. Since I have an Nvidia card (GTX1050), I looked into it and the screen capture component used to be called "ShadowPlay" but is now apparently called "Nvidia Share." It is not nearly as simple to use as the nifty screen capture utility that came with VS x9 -- that is the way to design a screen capture utility. It takes several more steps to start and stop a screen capture with Nvidia Share, and setting it up is not intuitive, but it does nice-looking 4K screen recording when it is set up properly. And it's free, since I have an Nvidia GPU card. In the couple of things I tested, I literally could not tell the difference between something on the the screen and something I had just captured using this screen capture tool.

FWIW, I found Corel's Multicam Capture Lite on my computer and tested it. It's a little clunkier to use than the simple screen capture utility that came with x9, but not too bad. (Nvidia Share takes several more clicks to get started.) Unfortunately, Multicam Capture Lite is limited to HD. I did not have any issues with it crashing, but I only ran it once.

I just hit the PRINT SCREEN key, jump into PAINT hit PASTE and you have a full screen resolution (2K in my case) image which you can then save out as a TIFF file and play with in Photoshop if you need.
