Moving VS from C drive across to another drive..

Post by garjobo123 »

Simple question, simple answer - 'right click - Sent to or Copy paste.

But of course nothing is straight forward when it comes to this lovely programme.

SO - VS is loaded onto my SSD drive. I want to move this across to my Hard Drive with more capacity.

Click on VS ..move across....or are there loads of other bits that also need moved across...this is a downloaded copy so not wanting to go to the trouble of asking Corel via email to send me through another link etc etc

Thoughts welcome.

No, you can't just move software from C elseware... this is because Microsoft doesn't want you.
Your only option is to uninstall and while reinstalling check closely for a new place.
**If SSD space is you after, try delete all unnecessary languages or MyDVD stuff if not relevant and so on.
You can clear ~1gig follow that path in VS alone and much more with all your C installations.

Before you do this, make sure that there is enough space on another drive/folder for the program. And be aware that some VS options (Ultimate filters for example) default install to C and there is no choice about that. So you will save some space on C but not as much as you might think.
VS versions always have C as the default install location: but since x10 every version uses an installer program and that has a custom install option to allow installations to other drives in a PC system; moving VS to a different non-C location means doing an un-install and cleanup (remove from C and tidy up: there's doco on how to do this on the forum), then a custom install (to the new location: drive/folder). And VS allows multiple versions to be installed on the same PC: you just can only run one of them at a time.
And the reason you cannot just move/copy n replace is that the registry has copious entries for any VS version. A standard windows uninstall still leaves pages and pages of them scattered thru the registry and need to be removed. The tidy up bit mentioned above is all about making sure that all the registry entries for the old installed version have been removed before you start putting new ones in place.

Or simply get a larger C drive unit; back the old one up, remove/replace, configure the new drive (need tools to do that) and then recover the backup file to the new C drive.

Thank you both for the replies ( I have just created a thread about this so my appologies forgot I asked this question! )

My SSD is small, my HD is large. In the past I have to move across videos etc onto my SSD just for the purpose of editing them ( if I don't then that ole' favourite 'relink black/white' image comes up in VS ).

So, I do that and then edit/render..usually no problems..but then I have to move back the videos to space up my SSD.

I noticed of late when editing - a pretty short video 5min with a few effects on there at best - it would come up 'out of memory' and such like ! Yet I have installed 32gb....so it's clearly the SSD..causing some part of the issue at least..it was virtually full.

SO...you say...when I download the new installation of VS ( which I think is X9 - have asked Corel for a new version as cleaned up my PC )...I can move the bulk of it over to D drive...a few bits stay on c drive..but at least...any videos can stay in d drive..so no moving across.

That correct ? answered my own question? Easy enough to tell installation to go to d drive?

thanks again for the replies.

Hi
Please confirm that the SSD contains your Windows Operating System and Video Studio is installed to SSD
and that your HD Drive contains your files, all data files.
If so
You can save all your video files to the HD drive
Then open VS to import those files to the programs timeline where they display as a virtual clip, a thumbnail.
When you render the project you can choose a location on the HD drive
Your SSD drive will never be loaded with any large video files.
Providing you do not move the video files then re-linking will not be a problem
I assume the HD drive is internal to the pc and therefor always connected to the pc.

You would also need to specify that the working folder is on the external hard drive since VS, when rendering projects, requires at least twice the space of the project for temporary files during rendering. And in case you make discs using the disc burner, you need to change the working folder there too as it can specify that the working folder is on your SSD/C: drive...

Oh My Goodness Lata gives me hope and Ken brings me back down to earth!

You both know your onions, and certaintly past attempts whenever i do mess about moving videos etc then Ken would appear to be correct as i have had issues over the years, having saved a edited version, go back into it and comes up 'relink' etc

SO what is my answer.

To answer your questions Lata, yes my SSD drive holds Windows and yes my HD is attached as per the norm to my PC. I wish it was so simple Lata, load VS18 as usual onto SSD and all videos etc lay on my HD and does the hardwork re rendering and saving back to HD...but as Ken points out..it isnt that simple.

Waiting on Corel to give me code for 2018 , When they do, I will install as per the norm onto SSD. Videos/photos i want to use...can i NOT add them to SSD and just bring them from HD into VS and just remember when i save my edits I save to D drive.

Can it not be that simple?

Hi
Yes it is that simple

Your video files stay on the HD drive, the program is installed as normal to the C/Drive on SSD

You import / insert the files to Video Studio by right clicking the timeline and select Insert Video, browse for the files on the HD and thats it.
If importing to the library a right click will show Insert Media Files, again browse for the files on HD

The video clips show as a virtual clip on the timeline or library, we edit to create our masterpiece
When we do Share - choose a suitable template and render / create a video file we can choose any "file location" selecting a folder on the HD

All files remain on the HD, none are transferred to the SSD.

As Ken said yes we can / should allocate our Working Folders, by default does use the Documents structure F6 Preferences - Edit - General tab to select a new folder.
The largest files you will see on the SSD are probably Smart Proxy files ( if you use those) and that folder location can also be changed / allocated to the HD drive via F6 Preferences - Performance tab.

You should never have to move your video files, as they remain in the same location will overcome any re-linking problems you were experiencing

To install VS 2018 all you need is the serial number and that should be on your Corel Account, use this link and sign-in

Hi
I did a search of the registry for VU21R22 which is the first digits in the serial number for 2018 and found the full serial number for my program
If you are not sure about using the registry then you are not on your own

This is what I did..........
From the windows search box entered Regedit that found the registry editor showing at the top of the panel
That opens the Registry Editor
Ctrl + F opens the search panel
Enter VU21R22 and hit search
The first try did not find the number, press F3 to restart the search, on this attempt it did find the full number
This was the registry location
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro\21.0

good luck

I have nothing further to add. I have no difficulty in what Trevor has said. Personally, I always have VS on my C:\ drive, but that is not an SSD and moreover has 2 TB so has plenty of space to leave the working folder where it is. But over the years, I have always kept my photos and videos on a separate hard drive, these days always an external hard drive, just because it is easier to have one dedicated hard drive for such storage purposes.

My suggestion about the working folder(s) was merely to remind people like garjobo123, who is worried about space on the SSD that there are space considerations if those folders are left on the SSD, and if the SSD is small, then it would be wise to move the working folders to another drive too.

Here endeth the lesson!
