I am using VS2018 because VS 20019 has feature issues that are not able to be corrected making it unusable for me. I was considering installing VS2020 until I saw all the problems it presented to other forum members .Do I understand correctly that if I install version 23.1.0.481 now it will be the perfect solution to a video editor’s dream ? Can I take it for granted when you install VS you will always get the latest version, is there a way to check this before installation or do I wait until there are no issues arising re this in the forum, otherwise it will be one step forward and two steps back and another round of frustration.

Hi Ken,
We are not in fantasy land, no NLE no matter who the developer is, will be perfect, VS 2020 build 481, whilst correcting many problems, still has many issues and hopefully SP3 whenever that will be released, will address many of the outstanding ones. To be honest, the last stable releases were VSX9 & VSX10
When downloading from Corel you will always get the latest version available

FWIW, I also edit with Adobe Premiere Pro and Blackmagic Design's DaVinci Resolve, and they lock up, crash and require strange workarounds to get things done as well. Editing software is complex, and bad things are going to happen. Especially when the editing software manufacturer has no control over the zillions of possible combinations of computer components, OS versions and camera file encoders.

Why do you want to upgrade? What are the new features that you need?Ken Veal wrote:I was considering installing VS2020 until I saw all the problems it presented to other forum members.

Ken, How do you like your i9 processor? Any noticeable improvement in encoding?

tletter,
The real reason I was considering purchasing VS 2020 Ultimate was the good discount Corel was offering and the fact that, for me, VS2019 crashes on attempting to author DVDs.That is one of the reasons I have to use VS2018.So the offer of the latest version is tempting. Below are some reasons that 2020 claims to include and the deal also included some other software
Edit smoother and render faster in Video Studio Ultimate 2020! Video Studio is now optimized for the latest video hardware acceleration technologies from Intel and nVidia, which improves efficiencies and dramatically speeds up rendering to popular file formats. Custom Split screen ,video masking
pepegota,
My last processor was a 2.20 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core and I am very happy with my i9 (which is the 1st intel cpu I have used )

Ken,
If you are still considering upgrading, wait until SP3 is released, the development team are currently working to release SP3, which will be another major update, but you have to understand the amount of testing required.
Of course you could still purchase VS 2020 with SP2 at a discounted price and wait for SP3

Re: VS 2019 > VS 2018 >VS 2020 >2018 ?
If urgency is not an issue, wait until sp3 as Robert suggested. Last anyone heard, the fix list for sp3 is lengthy. But you should be aware that it is probably going to be a while yet before sp3 is released: normally there is a service pack mid-year. This year - with the dislocations caused by covid-19, and the development team being in china - when it happens is anyone's guess.
But to emphasise Trevor's point about installation sequence, if you are getting 'funny' results and you have installed out of sequence, then I suggest:
1. you un-install all versions and start again, beginning with the oldest. In terms of the versions you list in the topic, start with 2018, then install 2019, and finally 2020.
2. when installing 2019 and 2020, if you use a custom install, make sure that for 2019 you install the content 2 files in it's own folder, not dependent on any prior version of VS. From version 2019 onwards, Corel is using a common content approach which means that common files for 2020 are also located there.
3. if you have installed 2019 first, then when you install 2020 you will notice that in the installer, the content2 folder is greyed out - you cannot change it's folder or location. What that also means is that if you un-install 2019 but leave 2020 installed, usage of those common files in 2020 may give you some odd results in the library and lots of re-link in any older projects.
For a project workflow, stick with one version for the whole project.

Unless something has changed recently, the development team is in Taipei, Taiwan which has virtually been untouched by COVID-19 due to the measures undertaken.Davidk wrote:This year - with the dislocations caused by covid-19, and the development team being in china - when it happens is anyone's guess.
