What might be causing these corrupt files ?

Post by Paul33 »

I've been having issues with about 5-10% of video clips recently shot on my Google Pixel 3 smartphone rammed up to the max at 4K and highest bitrate setting. Today's test shoot saw me take the heat off by dropping to shooting 2K with a more "normal" bitrate ...... but I'm still getting the odd bad file.

The files all play absolutely fine in any media player but there is something Videostudio doesn't like about some of these.

I have attached a screenshot of how the rogue file looks in Videostudio (far right file) and the software is quite unstable and doesn't want to move much until I remove it. I've also detailed the mediainfo data below which looks pretty much identical to the other files that work fine.

Any ideas ????

PS: The only remaining change that I have made that is different to previous more stable shoots is that I'm using the HEVC codec ..... could that be it ?

One place to start looking is the audio in the clip.
Referring to the posted image, there are two clips showing: 1 stated as good, and 1 as bad. Looked at closely, the bad clip has 2 audio icons (little speakers) in the clip thumbnail. As I understand it, even multiple audio like stereo or stereo/front/back (aka all around sound) are combined by an algorithm into 1 sound track when recorded in a camcorder or equivalent. And VS no longer supports all around sound - stereo is it.
I've never seen that 2 audio icons in one clip image before before and cannot image how such a clip could get 2 sound tracks from the one source, but that seems to be what the display is telling you.

I would think the variable frame rate can cause problems as the timelines can only support a constant fixed rate
If we add a NTCS 30 fps to a Pal 25fps timeline then VS drops 1 in 5 frames to change the 30 to 25 and yes it is noticeable especially with faster motion

So what is Video Studio gonna do with a 25.847 fps, does it remove 1 frame throughout the entire timeline, other of your video samples also uses a variable rate but not all the same rates are used from one sample to another.

Frame rate mode : Variable
Frame rate : 25.000 FPS
Minimum frame rate : 24.161 FPS
Maximum frame rate : 25.847 FPS

I ran the clip through Handbrake in the end and set a constant frame rate of 25fps and everything was fine but I remain a little unconvinced by the VFR argument ..... not because I doubt your explanation(s) which I understand but because I must have built 100+ videos from VFR files over the last 12 months and have not had the problems I've had recently. If VFR is the cause of these issues then why are the majority of clips absolutely fine and why has it not occurred previously ?

I'm currently building another 53 clip video today so I will be interested in how it goes but so far there are no problems.

Hi Paul
I do understand that in the past the videos have been ok, I don’t have another explanation other than a variable frame rate.
Most annoying that some work whilst others don’t.

I have just created today's 53 clip 2K video (not that Videostudio seems to know what 2K is !!!) and every clip worked fine with no corruptions and no audio sync issues either.

My own guess is that the issues have been to do with any one of or combination of shooting 4K, shooting HEVC rather than AAC, shooting with a very high bit-rate. I dropped all those today and shot 2K, AAC, moderate bit-rate and no problems ..... which doesn't exactly help me work out which one was the issue !!!

Thanks for your help once again.
