Audio laggy

Post by qholmes »

Hello, we just bought the full Ultimate 2020 package of VideoStudio and Photo etc. Trying our first edit of some GoPro video and normal camera video.

The Audio is very laggy. When we start the video its behind by about 2 seconds. It makes it very had to edit the audio.

Our computer is a newer Asus gaming ROG laptop GL504GV. 16 GB ram, RTX 2060 video card. SSD plus DATA hybrid drive. i7 8750.

After having lots of video lag we turned on Smart proxy for all the videos. The videos are 4k GoPro videos so i get that part..

But why is the audio so laggy.

I use Premier Pro for my work editing but i do not own that software myself. this was to be our home software for me and my son to edit videos. So far.. not super happy.

Ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum.

Is the audio legging from the moment you put the original video in the timeline, or only after rendering? If the latter, then on your Share page -- where the rendering is done -- turn off both SmartRender (different from SmartProxy) and Hardware acceleration. The latter may not sound logical, but it has been known to create problems for some people. And it does not greatly affect the time taken for rendering either...

You could try, though hardware acceleration is mostly used in the rendering phase. But it is rather rare to have the video and audio out of sync right from the beginning of the editing process. It used to happen, but that was a very long time ago -- more than ten years and a different format.

Can you please give us all the Properties of the GoPro video? Right click on a clip in the timeline and choose Properties. If possible take a screen grab of the Properties box and upload it here as an Attachment; or else type it out manually. I am assuming your GoPro is a recent model, and I think the cameras are using a different version of mp4 to the one I am used to in my old Hero 3 Black...

I'd be interested to know, for example, whether they are now using the HEVC codec. VS is supposed to be able to deal with this relatively recent format, and I suspect your computer is up to the job. But you need the MS HEVC extension installed to get it to work properly...

A laggy audio - even during edit when playing an HD clip, which is what gopro records - and jerky video is quite normal if you haven't turned smart proxy on.
To turn smart proxy on, Go to Settings, then Preferences, select the performance tab and ensure that the smart proxy box at the top of the panel is ticked. if not, tick it. claick OK.

It takes a while to create the smart proxy file - longer for large files, but when finished there is a small "keyboard-like" icon displayed in the thumbnail in the main timeline track. After that, playing the clip in project mode will show the audio and video in sync.

Hi
Just a short note on Smart Proxy
Proxy files are created when first inserting clips to the timelines, for clips already on the timeline we need to right click and choose Create Smart Proxy File, a small double looking icon will show on the clips using proxy files. Proxy Files can also be created from the library, again right click clips.

Thanks for the note on the Proxy files.. yes i did figure that out. Took a few min wondering why it had not changed..

Let me gather up the data on the files.. we are using a GoPro 7 Black.

I thought we had 4k video running on the gopro but its just HD. I can never figure out how to insert images into the message so i added as attachments.

I will try to make a couple new test projects with just one file type.. see how it performs with different file types.
