JVC GZ-MG155U CC to VS2020/Computer

Post by brucefl »

Hello,
I borrowed a Camcorder from a friend to record something for a nursing home we visit (and cannot because of the virus) It is a JVC GZ-MG155u, which seems like a great camera.
I have VS open and go to the capture and was going to hit the play and record (if it were so simple) I can go to the windows explorer and find it listed under M & N but when I click
the capture is says it appears there is not a driver. I am kind of hoping someone has the camera or has more experience in connecting than I do?
I am going to try and record something later and see if I could possibly find the file, though not sure I can get it to transfer.
Thanks for any thoughts or assistance.

Is the video you are after on an SD card in the camera or on the camera's hard disk? I understand that camera normally came with some kind of dock to make transfer of video from its hard disk easier. So I am of course wondering if your friend might have a disk with relevant drivers or capture software which might have come with the camera, or whether they might lend you the dock.

If the video is on an SD card, that would, of course, be easily read just by putting the card into a card reader attached to your computer, and the video transferred from it like any file.

Since it has a hard disk of 30 GB, I am also wondering if the USB connection from camera to PC would allow you to access the camera via File Explorer and transfer the video that way, rather than try and use the VS capture facility.

Since that camcorder records to hard drive or SD card, there is no need to capture. Simply use Windows File Explorer to copy the files from the camcorder to your system hard drive

There's an on-line manual for this camera (google search) and one of the functions described (on a quick look) is copying stills from the HDD to SD, or vice versa, the only constraint being that there is enough space on the target media. I cannot imagine that a similar facility for copying video files from the HDD to SD was omitted. So, rather than fiddling around with imports using other software/devices, simply copy the file to the SD card using the camera feature, take the Sd card to your computer, insert it into the Sd slot (or use a USB connected card reader) and copy it from the SD card to the main memory using windows explorer. After that, import to VS as necessary.
I used this process for years with a JVC SD camera (2008-16), and more recently (since 2016) a panasonic HD camera. Both of these units having record on SD card only - something I made sure of after a disaster with a DV camera and tape entwined in the mechanicals - with an SD unit, you can always retrieve the card even if the camera fails.

Thanks guys, after some playing with it, that is what I did plugged it into the USB and it actually finds 2 drive a M: and an N: I clicked on the N: and went through the folders and
transferred it. It does have also a docking station. I think I can get a faster transfer with the DV cord, it says IEEE. It may not matter, still worth a try. Thanks again.

Even if there is Firewire, like asik says, it won't give you more rapid download. While the camera produces mpeg-2, Firewire can download it. But Firewire works in real time so I would imagine one hour of video will take one hour to download on Firewire. As we have suggested above, download via USB cable as you have already found.
