Project Settings for 2K ?

Post by Paul33 »

Having a play with my phone camera and shooting at 2K resolution but ...... I'm struggling to get Videostudio to render at 2K (ie: 1152x2048) as there are no settings available and it won't allow me to create custom settings either.

I guess I can get around it if my first clip is 2K but if the project has an intro graphic then that may be an issue. Has anybody successfully rendered in 2K via Videostudio ?

Hi Paul
Your video appears to be portrait at 9 :16, just do not understand why we record to that instead of widescreen at 16 :9, unless there is some reason for a web site, but all our TV and pc’s have horizontal screens 16:9.
Ok if you start a new project insert one of your files, do you get a message to match the project properties, if yes then they will be set to 9:16
From Share - Same as project or first clip may be available.

If you cannot auto set the project properties, below the preview screen is an icon showing the screen aspect ratio ( second left from the clock)
You can set that to portrait ( the phone symbol)
Then from project Properties ( Alt+ Enter) you can also manually set the portrait
MPEG-4 AVC (1080 x 1920, 25p, 5Mbps)
I am not sure of the data rate of 5Mbps, but you could edit the settings to increase that, I guess similar to the original properties
Although the settings will use 1080 x 1920 is the nearest you will get to your video.

I do not work with portrait video so others on the forum may be able to help.

After doing some checking within 2020, it seems to me that you are not configuring your program correctly for the project you want to do. Mostly, there are no direct 2K settings except for FHD (1920x1080) which is a close approximation to the resolution you want to work with. The next step up is 4K. And VS has always IMHO worked for resolutions that were "close". So, some suggestions about how to proceed:
1. set the right project properties before you start - use Settings/project properties, and then choose "on-line" from the Project Format drop down list. There are several mp4 options that would encompass the resolution you want - 2160x2160 seems a good fit even if it's nominally a 1:1 format. Make sure that the preferences/general message box is ticked before you import your first clip and that will focus the project properties from the general to the clip specific when that 1st clip is imported.
2. make sure that you have enabled smart proxy for clips of this size, and wait for the proxy files to be created after their 1st import before trying to use them in edit mode (after the smart proxy icon appears in the timeline thumbnail).
3. when you get to render, in the share panel either choose same as project properties (tick the box), OR choose MPEG-4 (select the button) and select from the range of resolutions available in the Profile drop down box. The same render resolution of 2160x2160 is available or if the 1:1 result turns out to be not really acceptable, you could try the 2560x1280 item.
4. Some experimentation is probably going to be needed, so use the preview range option (tick the box) and use the sizing handles below the window to select what part of your project you want to preview/experiment with, and then render it, review the result for acceptability. When you are happy with a render solution, then remove the preview range selection and change the sizing handles to the whole project and render the whole thing.

Be aware that renders for this sort of hi-res project does take time to do. A lot of waiting may be needed - which is why I suggest the preview range option for any experiments you want to do.

Hi Paul
i guess easy mistake given that you were talking about a phone video

But same details as my first post but refer to 1920 x 1080
and below the preview screen will show as 16:9 and not the phone icon

I doubt the Show Messages will work with 2048 X 1152 size, however they are 16:9 ratio so the same size as 1920 x 1080 so everything should fit

My only concern now is from Share that you may get a message that the frame size does not match, i think it shows, to be seen?
